blood test results

Hi, I’m hoping someone can give some reassurance. receptionist from gp surgery called today with repeat blood test results to say my GGT levels were high and to avoid alcohol. I’ve booked a telephone consultation with a gp Monday to discuss these results. I had bloods done in august which they said my liver test function needed repeating in 2 months time as wasn’t normal… Liver function bloods have come back as normal but high GGT levels. I’m 25 years old and only drink if I go out with friends which is probably once every 4-6 weeks. I don’t drink at home or if I go out for meals etc. just abit worried as they have said not to drink I wasn’t planning on drinking anyways so that doesn’t bother me just concerned on why they needed to say that.

Dear Calll,

Welcome to the forum.

Until forum members have replied, and if you're in the UK, you may find it useful to talk things over with one of the nurses on our helpline. It's open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays) .

Best wishes

British Liver Trust

GGT is very sensitive and can go up and down due to many things. Do as your doctor says, take 90 days off (and don't cheat - no drinking during the Christmas holidays for example) and then test again. While I offer no guarantees, I think you will do fine, but you have to stick to the 90 days with no "slips". It's probably just a temporary thing due to your current drinking.

Please note that I am NOT a doctor. Also, as stated before, the British Liver Trust is an excellent resource, you should call them. Please listen to the professionals and not some random message board poster like me.
