NAFLD or AFLD?

Hi,

In May this year I had a TIA ( mini stroke) due to high BP. My stroke consultant sent me for loads of tests, including a kidney scan.He called me the following day to say kidneys are normal but the scan showed abnormalities in my liver.

He asked my weight, and asked if I had any pain. My BMI was about 32 and no symptoms /pain. He said the radiographer states the damage? ( didn’t use the word cirrhosis but another long word I can’t remember which means ?damage) is consistent with fatty liver. He advised to lose weight and go to GP if I get symptoms.

This was 3 months ago- I stopped drinking, lost weight ( still more to lose) and started to get more active.

I have made a tel appointment with my GP to discuss next steps.

My question to you guys is

What should I be asking GP in relation to ny liver? Should I be having more tests?

I was never asked about alcohol it was just assumed as NAFLD due to my obesity? Does it make a difference? As health advice for both is similar ( stop drinking/lose weight/ increase exercise etc)

Sorry for long post

Dear mvcjk_22

Here is the link to information about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on our website, which you may find useful. I would recommend downloading our booklet "Treating NAFLD with a Healthy Diet and Physical Activity".

It can be really challenging to make lifestyle changes. Please see these links to some other information on the British Liver Trust website about diet and exercise, which you may also find useful.

If you are in the UK and would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays).

Best wishes
