Poor sleep - help

Since having TIPS surgery 5 weeks ago I haven't been able to find sleep very well.

Sleep has never been a problem for me but now I just can't seem to get it. It's to the point I'm at breaking point.

Does anyone else suffer from this? I know sleep is impaired by liver disease, and wondering that since my TIPS didn't go as planned (a clot in PV, and ots also potentially blocking left side of PV vein) I am thinking it's all linked. I've a CT scan this Saturday to work out what is going on and if I need readjustment surgery.

Feeling like I could snap at any moment.

The only bit of advice I can offer is to try and understand what is involved with having a tips medical procedure. This is seen by the immune systems as being an attack upon the body. It then produces an inflammatory response.

The release of Cytokines and Macrophages into the body will seek out and destroy any invading germs and bacteria.

It has been discovered that Cytokines can crossover the blood-brain barrier and alter a person's mental state. This may include a feeling of depression for some people, and can also affect a person's sleeping routine.

I often find that once we understand what is going on, we can gain some closure and acceptance. This then stops us from worrying, which in turn can cause more stress and sleepless nights.

I have posted this video link up on here many times before, as many have found it informative and useful: youtu.be/iw7b0-yTnT0

I hope this helps

Thank you, I completely agree with this. Since my disease has got worse I am so emotional, anxious and fought and it seems since TIPS it has appeared to got worse. The video makes complete sense.

Unfortunately, the negative side of the TIPS operation can be an increase or appearance of HE symptoms. You need to discuss this with your doctor. Perhaps the standard treatment of hepatic encephalopathy with lactulose and / or rifaximin can normalize your sleep to some extent.

I had TIPS and haven’t slept well since, had to have it adjusted due to HE and it’s now blocked! I have ongoing HE and Ascites , which is under control pretty much with a bucket load of diuretics and also take lactulose and rifaximin. Doc can prescribe Melatonin but it didn’t work for me. I am now used to taking an afternoon nap and don’t go to bed til 12. By adjusting my sleep pattern I am now getting 5 hours sleep a night, most of the time. Being tired is tough though, it just adds to the stress of the illness.

Hope you get it sorted

Hi .. just don't beat yrself.up over not sleeping. I suffer very badly with lack of sleep but I rest when my body says it wants rest. Just except the fact its how it is just for now... it won't be for ever. Best of luck and please don't worry about it cos it makes it worse. Take care

TIPS recipient here as well; insomnia is a normal occurrence ce in my life. I take naps when needed and melatonin does help. However it was a struggle with HE the first two years.
