Azathioprine: Hi all I have been told I... - British Liver Trust
Azathioprine
I've never had much trouble with Azathioprine - only a couple of very mild side effects. It's been very effective for me.
HiWhen I started on Aza, all seemed to be well for a couple of weeks and then I began to suffer with nausea, tiredness and hair loss. Someone suggested taking it last thing at night so that I would sleep through any potential nausea. The only result of that was I had to get up in the night to be sick . Some say you should never take it along with dairy products which rather spoils breakfast.
I stuck with it for five months but noticed how much better I felt one day when I'd forgotten to take it, so that was it. The fact is that there are several alternatives (mycophenolate for example) so if it doesn't agree with you, ask if you might try one of those.
Having said that, some people have been taking it for years with no adverse effects at all. Good luck!
Hi Fee, I’ve been on it for years with no problems and my LFTs have improved.
Dear Fee63,
I had a Kidney Transplant, in July 2013. However, prior to this time, and since 1997 I was taking Azathioprine 150mg every day. I didn't suffer any significant 'Side Effects', certainly No More than I do now. (I tend to get 'problems' associated with Immune Suppresstion, mainly on my Skin).
Yes these drugs CAN have Side Effects, which Might cause 'Issues'- in which case Do 'Speak' to your Doctors/ Consultants- however these certainly Don't affect everyone. (I know that the Side effect can appear Frightening but, before you Worry too much, look at the Side Effects for Paracetamol- including Organ Failure and Death in large quantities. Hasn't your Sister been 'taking', as prescribed, them for years?) Sending you our
Kindest Wishes
