Has anyone suffered from side effects of these drugs? I was put on them approx. 6 weeks ago and my tummy right under the diaphragm feels so bloated since then, I had a problem with Cellcept and had to stop them, but now I have this problem.

Hi. I don't know what the Azathioprine are but I'm on Spirolactone as well, and yes, my stomach does feel like that, especially after eating, it gets really distended and uncomfortable. I had just put that down to 'normal' side effects of cirrhosis. Am trying not to take them Everyday actually, as I've heard from numerous sources that they are really not good for the kidneys. -Typical that. What dosage of Spiro are you on?

Inhave been on Azthioprine for 2 years. Like you I have a swollen stomach to but as this is the only side effect I'm having its one I can put up with. Having not taken Spirolacatone I have only assumed it was Azthioprine causing the problem. Hope you feel better soon.

I used to take Spirolacatone before I had my liver transplant. I was put on these to help reduce the fluid retention I suffered with. I never had any side effects but I was told by my consultant I was put on these because they wouldn't harm my kidneys and they didn't where over water retention medication would.

Hope this helps.

There is a side effect that occurs in men called gynecomastia. This unfortunate condition causes breasts to grow due to a hormonal inbalance I.e. low testosterone and raised estrogen levels. This can also be an effect of the liver disease itself or a combination of the two. I've heard that it can go away on stopping the diuretic but then there is the problem of the ascites getting worse. The only other options are medication with Tamoxifen, a cancer drug I think, or surgery - either reduction through liposuction or a full mammectomy if glandular (my condition falls into this category) neither available on the NHS as it's classed as cosmetic. Chronic liver disease is the gift that just keeps on giving. But as my doc pointed out, this is the least of my problems. On a separate note could anyone tell me what the difference is between compensated or decompensated cirrhosis.

Thanks
