Hello I am a 40 year old woman who has been drinking half a liter a day for 2 years. One year ago normal blood tests and ultrasound. I have liver pain, fatigue, nausea, bruise easily. I have read it takes many years to get cirrhosis but I have also read people much younger then me that ace alcoholic cirrhosis. Anyone here get it in that shirt amount of time? What were your symptoms? Thanks

I would suggest you revisit your doctor for up to date tests, if you are still drinking that quantity of alcohol daily it is entirely possible your liver is starting to grumble (or worse). Go and get some up to date tests and seek help to address your relationship with alcohol because if you don't yet have liver disease it won't be far away.

You mentioned blood's and ultrasound, what was the results and are you addicted to alcohol do you need it to function? Or is it social? Be honest please, I was addicted and I needed vodka and became a functioning alcoholic.... I'm totally over my addiction but it was health problems that gave me the push I needed to stop.

I'm with Danny, Vodka was my choice that I think might have done me in. But never that much a day but still no judgement.

I had an ultrasound and labs done a year ago all clean but continued daily drinking. I drink because of depression and it makes me feel better but in the end it makes things worse

Drinking will always make you feel worse mentally, physically and your health. You need another check up and please go as soon as possible, even if it means going through A&E. Your liver cannot take half a bottle of whiskey everyday for over a year! Make some appointments are please get checked out. If you feel bad there will be a reason why......... This needs doing..... Hi LC-half a litre of whiskey a day is a lot. I'm hoping that you've stopped doing that?

^ there is nothing that can be improved until you cut down drastically, or stop altogether for a while.

I have tapered down a lot

Tbh I would stop all together for a bit. If you bruise easily that can be a red flag your clotting is going awry which if it is, doesn’t lead to a happy place.

Hey and welcome. Everyone is an individual and like everything get affected in different ways and lengths of times. Perhaps see your GP and get your bloods done. Good luck.

Hi LC and welcome. Cirrhosis comes from different causes, but if we are just talking about alcohol... all it takes is one drink... that last one that pushes the liver beyond the point of no return...

Now, that one may be drink number 100 or drink number 10,000... depending on the individual and any underlying problems. I think you know you are running out of time before you get to that point, that one drink may be the next drink you take.

The others here speak from experience, an extremely harsh experience that they kindly try to prevent anyone else from ever having to endure. Livers can get healthy provided we stop damaging them and start helping them. Alcohol has zero benefits it is "poison" as Dean, Danny, G, Katie, Ubwa and others will attest.

I think you are already at the crossroads where you know you need to turn back and just need a little support. Luckily you have found the friendly forum and everyone here has got your back covered, I hope you start getting your liver well and keep us updated, even join in with our posts, replies and day to day chat. Everyone here is always ready to listen or even ask you for a little advice now you are part of the community.

Wishing you well

Dave

Just like to point out that in my hubbies case alcohol played no role whatsoever in his cirrhosis as he is life long t-total. His cirrhosis is due to auto immune liver disease.

BUT, I can certain attest that alcohol is every bit the poison as you say. If hubby could have done anything to stop his illness progressing he would have grabbed the opportunity with both hands - wouldn't wish cirrhosis on your worst enemy.

That would be around 2 bottles of wine a day. ~20 units, 140 units a week. That is on the heavy side and is not sustainable. So 1 year ago you had no signs of inflammation and carried on for a year. I would say get some more bloods done, I would be surprised if you aren't showing signs of Liver stress now. The accepted amount is 2 bottles of wine a day for 10 years can end you up with End Stage Liver disease. Of course the Liver is being damaged way before it finally ends you up in hospital.

You probably haven't reached End stage yet, but you must see a doctor and come up with a plan to check your health and to stop this dangerous drinking habit. It will no doubt cause you harm in the end.
