MRI Liver

Hi

Does anyone know how often you should have liver mri if you have Cirrhosis?

I was dx with Cirrhosis 7 yrs ago (PBC 16yrs). Never had a liver mri

You should be having 6 monthly scans (usually only an ultrasound) to monitor your liver and check for the presence of any changes.

MRI is usually reserved for if an issue is detected on your 6 monthly ultrasound.

My hubby has had cirrhosis since April 2012 - he has 6 monthly ultrasound scans in line with NICE guidelines and has only had to have 2 MRI scans and that was to check on what some new lesions were that showed up on ultrasound - thankfully benign bits of extra dense cirrhotic tissue.

Thank you Katie, yeh I have 6 monthly ultrasound scans and endoscopies for monitoring varices, bloods. Just never had mri of liver. Had 3 mri with contrast of brain for HE.

You'll only need an MRI of liver is something is picked up on ultrasound that they can't ID. It's not a routine part of monitoring and it sounds like you are getting the scans you should have with your 6 monthly ultrasound.
