Hi there, a little follow up from my last post, si my bloods came back normal and the receptionist said my Dr didn't want any follow up after my us scan so she said it's probably normal , should I book an appointment with the Dr to discuss this? I'm also on Spironolactone tablets for fluid in my stomach but I don't think they're working? So should I phone the Dr ? For me my liver feels enlarged so not sure what to do? Thanks
Test results: Hi there, a little follow... - British Liver Trust

I would definitely seek an explanation from your doctor, did the US confirm fluid in your abdomen for example? If you are on tablets for fluid then you need to be monitored as they in themselves can cause potential issues.
Yes, I would seek clarification of what exactly the scan showed - even perhaps ask if a Fibroscan is possible. Although, US would generally be good at identifying serious liver disease I think I would want clarification that all was indeed 'ok'.

Hi Katie, I have no Idea what the scan showed? Something must be going on as I have been drinking heavily for 20 years , we're talking like 70 units a week so I think I will phone the Dr to discuss everything . Thanks for your reply ☺️
Hi BTS1 my fluid buildup was a result from cirrhosis and with taking the water medication can lead to kidney failure, so you need blood tests every 2 weeks to make sure. You definitely need more information about your condition that way you can get the right course of medication to deal with the problem (ascites is a problem). I used to take 200 to 300mg of spironolactone and 100mg of furosemide (it helped) and I still needed to be drained.Push some more and Don't be afraid to ask your doctor or if you feel misguided, say could I get a second opinion please. You are entitled to.
All the best Danny x
Hi Danny, I'm only on 25 mg , I've nearly finished the packet, the Dr hasn't said anything about when to stop taking them or anything really, and I didn't know about the kidney failure side effects, I feel like I'm really in the dark about everything! Not sure what to ask the Dr to be honest 😭, Thanks for replying x
Don't worry please 25mg on it's own says to me that it must be minimal. I takes more than that far kidney failure. That is probably why he/she didn't mention it. I also think 25mg does nothing to relieve the fluid (which is why I was on that amount) but it has to be introduced slowly incase of the kidneys reaction. Still ask the Dr why the fluid builds up. It doesn't just appear, there has to be a diagnosis of the liver to explain the ascites fluid. Ask for an accurate report, I know if I did I could of dealt with my condition sooner.
Good luck Danny x
Hi. Im on 50mg of spirolactone and please don't overthing about kidneys failure. I was taking 100mg and it was too much for me as my kidneys started to work little bit less but I asked doc and they limited it to 50mg and i have no ascites and kidneys are ok. Some people can get kidneys problems some no, same as for some people douretocs will help for other not. Best is ask your doctor as here we are not medical trained to give any advice about results or tablets.
It sounds as if your liver results are okay, which is great, so try not to be too anxious. Cirrhosis is a bit like a terrible lottery, where 2 people could drink to the same excess but only one might end up with it! Just because you drank heavily don't be over anxious about it, but do stop drinking now as you're obviously concerned and it is a risk. That being said, you really should talk to the doctor regarding the Spironolactone, because you must be on it for a reason. What fluid do you have and what's the cause? Hope you get some answers, best wishes, K
How there , the Dr didn't say what the fluid is ? I'm just really confused about the whole thing really,so I'll call the Dr tomorrow and thanks x
I would also book an appt with your doctor. They had me on that and furmaside or something like that at the hospital but the liver specialist took me off it. That seems odd to me they say your fine but still take that.
Btw I feel your pain about dr.s keeping us in the dark in the USA. Every doctor in the hospital gave me a different answer.
I was taking Spirolactalone for Oedema but I had side effects so stopped taking them after about ten days so cannot help much - sorry.
I have cirrhosis of the liver and take 100mgs spironalactone daily. 20mg of furosemide was added in June. I didn't have much ascites but very swollen legs and ankles. Almost impossible to see gp during the pandemic. I am lucky to be closely monitored by the liver specialist nurses at the QE in Birmingham. I can pick up a phone for advice anytime and they usually tell me to pop up and see them. I have an outpatient appt tomottow for another Ultrasound scan, bloods, consultant, meds review and dietician. I was having scans every few months, bloods checked fortnightly at one time. As I remain well the appts reduce and it is 6 months since my last scan. I am just over 12months sober. I am so grateful for the care I receive.Good luck.
Thanks everyone for your replies , I'm definitely going to contact my GP x
