Terrible GPs need to be held to account, there are so many out there who are beyond degrading and absolutely terrible at their jobs. For YEARS I had 2 of them diagnose me incorrectly for THREE YEARS because of my age (not related to liver disease, however may have contributed significantly to my worries) 3 years of paracetamol, tramadol and diclofenac

Finally see another GP and get immediately referred to a specialist, when I entered the specialists office the first thing he said to me. "Before we begin, I have written a letter of complaint here ready to send to your GP practice, with your permission I will send this off" for 3 years, because of my age they diagnosed me constantly for something they already knew I didn't have (I was 18-21 and sexually active, go figure) The specialist said, no, on your first ever appointment you got tested positive for a UTI, did they ever follow it up? no they didn't, they didn't even tell me I had a UTI. Well, 3 years later, that UTI had travelled its way up further and caused havoc, 3 months of anti biotics and after the first month I no longer needed the painkillers.

When I complained to the practice I was advised that the GPs in question are highly trained professionals who were following the correct actions (ignoring test results?) the specialist in our final meeting said that even his letter of complaint got batted off to the side and that he has seen too many GPs get away with terrible practice. More people need to take their GPs to account, while their are many wonderful GPs out there, there are a few bad apples that ruin primary care. I still do this day refuse to see any other GP than the one who finally referred me to a specialist (even she admitted the last 3 years of action at that time were completely incorrect)

I hope you manage to get an outcome with your complaints regarding your GP, their should be a more streamlined process of GP complaints for the public.

Thanks ! Not just me then,it's totally unacceptable,but they are allowed to make mistakes,my poor mum bless her was admitted with low sugar,after numerous tests it was low potassium,they failed to take notice of what we had said that she had a problem with her mouth,that was Tuesday,Oct,on the Friday they checked her mouth after saying Thursday she was at end of life,but discovered that she had an abscess that was the issue,they apologised and said sorry mistakes happen,by law the end care nurse said the paper work was implemented to say such,they discharged her Monday with a severe throat infection ,the medication she was sent home with was subcantaneius,I rang the GP in desperation for help,Gold framework,! I will make an appointment for tomorrow he said,she passed away 2 hours after call,I will never forgive them,Never. I had to see a physciatrist last year after they left me for dead,of which he is 100% behind me after their lies and cover ups,I won't be clapping.Trust.!! Do they know what that means anymore.So sorry but so annoying to say the least.

I understand your frustration, we have unfortunately went through a similar loss that fell through the cracks of mismanagement by the GPs. However I do stand by that a lot of GPs are marvelous, just the bad ones are spoiling the crop.

Hi Dave,

You may find our 'Patient Charter' helpful to read, it details the care you should expect to receive if you are diagnosed with a liver condition in the UK;
