My hubby was diagnosed with cirrhosis at the end of 2019. Today his ultrasound showed a swollen kidney, with the technician asking him twice if he was sure he didn’t need to wee 🙄. Wondering if anyone has experienced this and what it could be. My googling suggests hydronephrosis perhaps? Would appreciate hearing your experiences while we wait to meet with dr.
Hi I had similarities. Mine started as a UTI that after 4 courses of antibiotics failed to cure and turned into urosepsis due to a blockage at the kidney pelvic junction causing hydronephosis which lead to sepsis. A nephrostomy was performed on the 13th of April and is still in place to drain the kidney until a laparoscopic pyeloplasty can be performed. However this is not the only cause for hydronephrosis and requires investigation by a urologist and I hope the doctor do refer your husband to one.
It was during the US that they discovered I had liver disease.
Hopefully your husband will have a speedy recovery.
I have forgotten to add be careful of Dr Google a swollen kidney could be caused by other factors so a urologist or renal specialist will be best placed to identify the cause.
Thanks for your reply Woodi. I’m glad to hear you are recovering from your procedure. It sounds like it was quite an ordeal for you to get to the root cause and I’m happy you’ve now found the cause and can be properly treated. Well, my husband does go to his hepatologist every three months for monitoring with blood work, ultrasound, and fibroscan done each time. At his last round, three months ago, the dr. felt the swelling and sent him to a urologist who found no blockage. Yet now, three months later, the ultrasound again shows the swelling. My husband has been feeling well other than some fatigue and horrible night itching.
You are so right about Google, I just can’t help myself. Really just trying to research possible causes and what this means, and hear others experiences which is so valuable and appreciated. When we get a clear diagnoses of what’s going on I will let you know. Thank you again Woodi.
