I have just received my final written diagnosis from my consultant, and I am rather a little confused about the results.
The letter states the following
NAFLD
Fibrosis-4 Index: 0.71
Fibrosis score: - 0.55
Liver biopsy: Bridging fibrosis. Portal to Portal, Portal Central and Prominent Central Fibrosis (stage 3),
I am just wondering what the benchmarking score is and if anyone had any idea where I can find further information on what the actual scores mean or how they are defined/interpreted.
Many Thanks

This is a non invasive method based on clinical determinations that indicate the level of fibrosis/ scarring of the liver. It is used especially for Hepatitis C and NASH correlated fibrosis. The set cutoffs for this scoring are:
■ FIB-4 < 1.45: absence of cirrhosis
■ FIB-4 between 1.45 - 3.25: inconclusive
■ FIB-4 > 3.25: cirrhosis
As regards the NAFLD fibrosis score you can find details on this test and parameters at:- fattyliverdisease.com/nafld...
Your biopsy is obviously pretty conclusive in showing bridging septa between areas of fibrosis without it yet having reached full on cirrhosis stage. F3 Fibrosis is often also designated incomplete cirrhosis.
At this stage you should still be able to make significant improvements to your liver with healthy eating, alcohol abstinence and a degree of good exercise.
You can turn this around. If you've not already seen it BLT has an excellent page on NAFLD and a recent study about the benefits of a Mediterranean style diet for NAFLD.
