It depends on what type of anti-rejection medication you are taking. Tacrolimus can alter the way the hepatocytes in the liver process and handle sugars. If you were diabetic prior to having a transplant, then there is a good chance you'll be a type 2 diabetic afterwards.
My liver became insulin resistant and I became a type 2 diabetic. Now, nearly five year post transplant, I am still diabetic. My diabetes is presently controlled by medication but I suspect I may have to go back onto insulin.
Hi what makes u think u may have to go back on insulin. I was diabetic after transplant and was on insulin after a few months I came of it and taken gliclazide now. My blood sugar reading was always about 7.5 average over 14 days now it has crept up to 8.5 but I have been eating things I know make it go up . My hba1c last test was 55 it had previously been 60.
I had my transplant carried out at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. If ever you go to this hospital by train, you'll notice that the next stop along the line is Bournville. This is the home of Cadburys Chocolate. I know my liver donor was a 48 year old local male. I suspect that he used to work for Cadbury's.
I think I now have a inherited chocolate addiction. (This is what I tell myself anyway).
