I was just wondering if it is safe for me to go swimming with Cirrhosis or am I being too ambitious. I am eager to exercise, I have really missed it. Worrying about swallowing chlorine...
At the moment I find it hard to walk for long as my legs start to feel really heavy and ache like mad (even though they are like sticks), so I thought maybe light swimming could help now that the pools have reopened.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Swimming is excellent exercise. Go for it. My hubby and I have been swimming since his diagnosis and he is really loving being back at his hill walking too.
It's really important to exercise since muscle loss with cirrhosis is common and if you remember that your heart and diaphragm are muscles too it's important to keep those healthy.
Remember you need to fuel for exercise as your body can't store and release energy as efficiently as a healthy liver so you don't want to end up 'running on empty' - protein and carbs to help with your fueling and protecting your muscles.
Thank you that's very reassuring, I will have to get a new cossie 😀.
It's great that your hubby is enjoying swimming and hill walking after his diagnosis, you must be so proud of him, it is also a great inspiration for others.
I don't think I will be going hillwalking for quite a while, can just about walk up the stairs.
Swimming is probably very good. Are the swimming pools open? Maybe you live close to the sea. Here in Lübeck everything is closed, but the Baltic is slowly warming up - still too cold though!
Hi DanubianThe swimming pools are open now, well they are where I am. You have to book a time when you want to go so I will get booked in. Before I got myself into this mess I used to go swimming every morning, it will be nice getting back in the pool.
Wouldn't catch me swimming in the sea, I would get washed away. 😧
Here everything is shut. I am a bit of a baby with health anxiety but when it comes to the cold water, I swim from 16°C upwards. Actually it just occurred to me, what if the sea is very salty, is this bad for the liver? Btw. the Baltic is not very salty at all.
Seems like your sense of humour is intact, well done. Going inward is as bad for us liver abusers as the physical consequences of what we did. Exercise, especially fresh air, contributed greatly and still does to my schedule to stay well as much as it depends on me. Heed Kates words about fuel too. Recognise changes in your body depending on what you do, or eat, and respond accordingly. Keep us posted on your journey to full health again 😁
Swimming is one of the excellent exercises to maintain a healthy body. If you are suffering from Cirrhosis it's necessary to maintain your health well otherwise you may affect some other disease too.
It's really important to exercise daily since muscle loss with cirrhosis is a common problem. My friend is also suffering from this same issue and his family doctor suggest swimming and walking daily is the best exercises to maintain your heart, diaphragm and other muscles healthy, but due to this covid-19 walking and swimming in public pools and the street way is danger at this time. So he installed a customized swimming pool (soldapools.com/) in the backyard to exercise.
In my suggestion, you can also use a similar way to maintain the body health other than waiting for the public pools to reopen
