Why the pain

Hi all

To cut a long story short and info is probably on my last threads but....

I gave now list 1 st 10Ib since x mas and have 1st to go to reach perfect bmi although have not been 10 st since I was at school I’m sure, in 55 with children and overactive thyroid. So might be a long slog to get there but will keep going.

No alcohol since mid Feb but still the pain continues in my side liver area. My appointment is no where to be seen as on a list hospital said but not for appointment yet.

I appreciate that other may need a referral before me. I just don’t know why a fatty liver that was reported to be 16.1 cm can hurt so much.

I work in a secondary school and am very active. Even my cholesterol was ok. I hope to goodness my Gamma readings have dropped now but no bloods due yet so can’t tell.

Just why the pain?

Bless all those who suffer.🙏

The liver itself has no pain receptors so the liver doesn't emit pain itself, however, it is contained in a membrane called the glissons capsule and when this is stretched by an enlarged/inflamed liver it can be very painful (as described by many on here who have a fatty liver).

Hi, As Katie has said above, if the liver is inflamed, it can cause discomfort. Can you consider reporting this to your doctors?

Have you been told you have Non-Alcohol Related Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? If so, then you may be interested in our publication:

NAFLD can have different stages so you are quite right to want to find out more.

NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have devised guidelines with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) that state people diagnosed with NAFLD should have further testing to assess for their risk of fibrosis- stiffening or scarring in the liver.

The specific blood tests are Fib-4 score blood test or an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) blood test. A specific scan called a FibroScan also estimates fibrosis.

Hi Can my doctor order the Fib-4 blood test. I feel they have washed their hands of me whilst I’m on the waiting list for the hospital.

I just thought with the weight loss, healthy eating and excercises I thought that the pain would subside not continue or get worse.

I’m really trying to everything right but honestly I just want to put my head in bucket of alcohol and eat 100 chocolate bars.

My mental ability is struggling to see a positive connection in what I’m doing right. Haven’t even got an appointment on the horizon just get told I’m in the system. It’s having a knock end affect at home as I am so stressed.

If I could feel less pain I would have faith that it’s working. All I keep thinking is that it’s getting worse.

😢

If you are in the UK and have a diagnosis of NAFLD then there are NICE guidelines for the management of this and the GP can view them online. You can always call our nurse helpline here at the Trust for a chat, you are not alone.
