Good morning,

As there have been a few posts about diet in the last few days, members might find it useful to take a look at this page on our website:

britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

If you have liver disease eating a good, balanced diet is essential to maintain strength and a healthy weight. You might also need to change the food you eat depending on:

the type of liver disease you have

the stage of the damage to your liver - people living with cirrhosis have special dietary needs

any eating difficulties you experience such as loss of appetite or feeling sick (nausea)

If you have already been given dietary advice you should not make changes without first talking to your consultant or dietitian. If you haven’t seen a dietitian or you have specific questions about your diet, you can ask your doctor to refer you.

Best wishes

I asked my GP for a referral to a dietician and was told NHS dieticians don't do this, they can only help with IBS etc..

My GP gave me an urgent referral to a Dietician as soon as I was diagnosed. GP stated that a good diet is critical when living with decompensated liver cirrhosis, so she wanted to make sure I was given professional advice.

Intermittent Fasting works a treat for me!

Depends on individual cirumstances and underlying cause/stage of condition. Dietary advice is really needed before doing intermittent fasting.Someone with advanced cirrhosis for example should avoid long spells without food and have to eat little and often and even have to have a large pre-bed snack to fuel overnight (fasting is a no no in that circumstance).

Even for weight loss fasting can lead to the body laying down even more fat.

thank you, I’m undiagnosed with tests pending in Liver, ovarian or pancreatic cancer although my guess is gallbladder but hey I’m just the patient.

Changing diet to cut down fat, sugar and salt is not easy, stopping drinking alcohol was easier if I’m honest. The food package industry needs a change as it’s nigh on impossible to shop sensibly. If I have plain salmon and rice once more this week I’ll implode!

I shall read your information with interest.
