Fatty liver is becoming the fastest growing liver disease in the western world precisely due to our more sedentary lifestyle and poor diet (plus booze where it's included in your intake). It is possible to make hugely positive changes to your liver health through better diet and exercise.

The British Liver Trust has some excellent guidance on Non Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) at :- britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

They have also publicised word of a study which advocated a Meditteranean style diet for improvement of NAFLD. britishlivertrust.org.uk/ea...

This condition is not to be ignored as there is potential for it to get worse so do heed your doctors advice regarding positive lifestyle changes.

Hello runlif, and welcome. All that Katie has spelled out is all good advice. I think there is a need to try and find out what is driving this fatty liver. There are many reasons for this.

I think in your case we can safely rule out alcohol as being a factor, and look more closely at your diet and lifestyle.

Are you by any chance taking any medication? Certain medications can be toxic to the liver, and so can supplements and herbal remedies. If you can establish what the cause is, then further liver damage can be avoided, and the liver will get a chance to repair itself.

Try not to worry about the Fatty Liver stage, but at the same time, take these signs seriously. In some respects you are fortunate, many people can go on to suffer with cirrhosis and not even know they have a liver problem. So, this early warning could be used as a blessing.

Good Luck.

Richard

I think under the circumstances it might be advisable to give the helpline a call on0800 652 7330 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday

I have already messaged Trust 1 about your Pernicious Anaemia and as this is a rare condition they maybe better placed to advice you further.

Good Luck with this.

please do something about it now --I wasnt advised when i had fatty liver and now have Nash 2-3 which is a lot more serious I am not sure what grade is but i have stopped progression of mine ---I would have been in a better position had i acted when i had fatty liver only --- trouble is there are no symptoms until its to late with cirrhosis so I think you dont realise how serious it can be

thanks. yes sure will take all necessary measures

Have you been told you have Non-Alcohol Related Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? If so, then you may be interested in our publication:

britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

NAFLD can have different stages so you are quite right to want to find out more.

NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have devised guidelines with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) that state people diagnosed with NAFLD should have further testing to assess for their risk of fibrosis- stiffening or scarring in the liver.

The specific blood tests are Fib-4 score blood test or an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) blood test. A specific scan called a FibroScan also estimates fibrosis.

You may want to discuss this with your own GP or consultant who will be able to look up the NICE guidance.

If you do have some weight to lose, then you could also ask your GP for a referral to a hospital registered dietitian for more support and guidance.

In having a look at what you've written to Richard and your mention of Vit B12 deficiency and PA - is that Pernicious Anaemia?

Pernicious Anaemia is an auto immune conditon- I would make sure you get checked out for other potential auto immune conditions.

In staging your liver issue has doctor checked you out for other conditions other than potential NAFLD.

As a limited drinker with a liver issue some doctors might plump for the obvious NAFLD diagnosis when looking at why you might have a non alcohol related condition without looking at others and when you have one auto immune illness it is common to have more than one.

The immune system once in over drive can attack other organs too - one of which might be the liver and is well worth asking questions about.

My hubby is life long t-total and yet has cirrhosis - his being due to auto immune hepatitis.

Just a thought having seen your update.

Hi

Yes you can improve a fatty liver. Please take it seriously. Unfortunately although a fatty liver was noted on many scans (done for other reasons) nobody ever said anything other than we'd expect to see that . I am overweight and have other health conditions. Last year I was seeing gastro for a follow up for investigation of gallstones. Fortunately for me it was a new consultant and she said she would do a fibroscan just to rule everything out before discharging me back to my gp. The scan was delayed 3 months due to covid but when I had it I couldn't have been more shocked. Not only did my fatty liver score the highest measurement possible but I have also got cirrhosis. I have managed to lose 2.5st since and am trying all I can to slow down the progression. Good luck to you in your journey.

hi, how many years after it turned to chirossis.... mine is roughly 3 years it turned from normal to grade to fatty liver.. do you think i could have fibrosis or chirossis

sheperd86 profile image
sheperd86 in reply to runlif

They have mentioned mine for several years but I have never actually seen anyone about it or had it graded it was merely mentioned in a by the way kind of comment. I do I have a friend who was found to have a fatty liver and was sent straight to specialist who monitored her for a couple of years and then discharged her as it had improved. I am sure you will be monitored carefully, it sounds as if you are already under specialist care.

Do away with fast food and oils in your diet. Walk or jog every other day and soon you can get rid of the fatty Liver. You want to do this to trim the fat of your Liver so it never becomes cirrhosis once it becomes cirrhosis, you never lose it and eventually will need a transplant to remain alive.
