There is no treatment for fatty liver. It's about stopping putting the foods into your body which causes it such as high fat high salty and sugary foods plus processed foods and alcohol. If you change your diet to low fat, low sugar and no salt and drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins, your liver will love you for it and the pain will in time subside. I would also recommend you speak to your Dr so any other reasons for your pain can be ruled out.
NAFLD can have different stages so you are quite right to want to find out more.
If you are in the UK, NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have devised guidelines with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) that state people diagnosed with NAFLD should have further testing to assess for their risk of fibrosis- stiffening or scarring in the liver.
The specific blood tests are Fib-4 score blood test or an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) blood test. A specific scan called a FibroScan also estimates fibrosis.
You may want to discuss this with your own GP who will be able to look up the NICE guidance and you could also discuss your symptoms.
I was in the same boat as you and thought nothing of it. When I started getting a slight ache they told me it was gallstones so I went to have my gall bladder removed and was then told the terrible news that I had liver cirrhosis. Please just change your diet and avoid foods like refined sugars and carbs and also my consultant told me red meat, alcohol & sugary drinks are an absolute no no as they are like poisons for the liver. I have also been told to lose weight slowly with a balanced diet choosing healthy carbs such as wholemeal bread, pasta and rice and to also exercise moderately like going for long walks. Since being diagnosed in February and with no side effects that I was aware of (although I now know that my tiredness was one) making these changes and using the treadmill at least 4 times a week I have lost 2 stone. I still have a way to go but just want to live longer so am trying everything in my power not to get worse. I wish when I found out about Fatty liver that I had known what I know now but no one ever told me that it could develop to such a life threatening irreversible disease. Im sorry for sounding so negative but with just a few changes you could reverse your fatty liver and I would do that immediately if I were you. Wishing you so much luck on your journey to a healthier and longer life.
So did the cirrhosis not show on your ultrasound or CT scan? I’ll be honest both mine are clear and show I have acute on chronic Cholecystitis so having gallbladder removed. I am a tad worried that although the CT scan and ultrasound didn’t show cirrhosis they might say I have it when they see my liver during my operation..
No one mentioned it to me till after my op. The surgeon was concerned with how bad my liver looked that he took a biopsy and then told me that I had cirrhosis and left me with no other information saying he was a surgeon and I had to speak to a specialist but that it was very serious and to look it up. I did and was horrified and with the lockdown in place it was difficult to talk to or get hold of a specialist. I finally was able to book a private consultation because I thought I was dying as everywhere on the internet it says 9-12 years to live and the surgeon said I had probably had it for 10 years already. I was, as I am sure you can imagine, devastated but when I spoke to my specialist he was absolutely lovely and told me that if I did all the things he told me and lost at least 5-10% of weight and stuck to it I would most probably die with it but not from it. This gave me hope and I have already lost 28lbs and doing ok. It IS really hard but he also said not to lose weight quickly as that can do more damage than good and also to not avoid carbs altogether as a balanced diet was needed but just to avoid refined processed foods such as white flour, white rice, white pasta, sugar and to definitely not have any sugary drinks, red meat and alcohol. I hope this helps I am by no means an expert, I am just passing on what I have been told by my specialist who was very positive indeed. I really wish you and everyone in the same boat all the very best on their very difficult journey.
Sorry for not replying sooner. I did have scans but I think they were more convinced it was my gall bladder so were looking for stones which they also found and is why I had the gall bladder removed. I know it is easy for me to say but try not to worry about something you dont know about - wait till you are told as you may be worrying for nothing 🤞 You can help yourself by following all the advice on here anyway as it is a good change for your body whatever your outcome. Good Luck
