Not allowed to drain ascites

Hello, my father had HE because he was constipated and it raised his ammonia level. Now since he was fined lot of IV based medical fluids, he has large ascites. Doc is saying it’s not safe to remove the water as it will come back quick and removing it may also put him in coma stage. They are not willing to remove more than 1 liter a day or 4 day.

I was told before that it will be removed but now since he had HE, now they are saying unsafe to drain.

Is there another opinion?

Good afternoon zvhipp,

I am sorry to hear you father is unwell.

I have included links to the British Liver Trust information regarding Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) and cirrhosis.

Sometimes in significant liver disease, it can be a difficult balancing act trying to manage all the various symptoms safely.

May I suggest you discuss with your dads doctors and ask them to clarify their reasons?

If you are not satisfied, you can ask for a second opinion or contact Patient Advice and Liaison Service ( PALS)

Best wishes to you all,

Thank you. We brought him back home as doctors said he won’t leave from hospital alive 99% which I refused to believe. Now at home, he is back to his normal senses, eats well n is able to urinate and pass stool normally.

Doctors were giving him IV fluids of almost 2 liter and tube feeding of about 1 liter (which by the way was being backed up in pipe, i had nurse opened cap of it to clean it, almost 2 liter came out and then nurse also removed another liter). They stopped feeding him completely after that.

All that stopped At home, so did growing ascites. He had 3 liter drained and now we will do 4 more after a keeping a gap of one week between two drains.

One thing I can be sure of is that if i had left my father in hospital, he couldn’t have made it back home. After next planned paracentesis, I will take him for endoscopy so they can check his varices, he which he hasn’t been checked since 1 year 4 months. Perhaps that’s adding to his ascites but will know once it’s checked.
