Is it normal to still have pain on & off 3days after having a liver biopsy in NHS? Thankyou for any input.
Liver biopsy : Is it normal to still... - British Liver Trust
Liver biopsy
Yes, it can be a bit sore for a bit, if it gets agonizing sore though they could have nicked the diaphragm - if it gets intolerable contact your doctor.
Thankyou for responding, was just asking as way the NHS radiology department said after 2days. Should start to feel okay. But this is 3rd day after it still have back & chest pain on & off which taking paracetamol for. But dont like keep on taking pain relief constant for it. Thought pain may have eased off a bit by now. How long can pain normally last for on & off after having liver biopsy would you know? Thankyou
Everyone is different, some folks have no pain and for others it lasts a bit longer. It's only day three so very early yet, not everyone will heal at the same speed.

Hi, I have had a 3 liver biopsies and have been slightly different each time, I did experience a kind of achey, wind type pain more uncomfortable rather than painful maybe for about a week afterwards, if it is really painful I would maybe give the dr a call just in case, hope you feel better soon xx
Hi Kate, thanks for your reply I give it few more days hopefully the pain, will die down by then after liver biopsy. Like you said if it dose'nt I will give Dr a call. Kind Regards Jayne x
Hi
I had my second liver bx last week and I had slight tenderness just like a bruise for two days but my friend had one and was in pain for over a week . Hopefully it will ease up
Is a liver biopsy painful when they carry out the procedure?
A liver biopsy is an invasive surgical procedure that is not undertaken lightly. Depending on the area and the depth at which the biopsy is taken, healing can take up to several weeks to take place. During this time pain may be experienced both at the entry site, and in the back, which is referred pain from the liver itself. Sufficient rest is necessary for the healing to take place, and paracetamol can be used for pain relief and to reduce inflammation. If you are at all concerned after more than a few days of pain, contact your GP for advice. Hopefully you will feel more comfortable soon
Thankyou for your reply regarding recovery after having a liver biopsy. Strange you mentioned back pain as been getting pain in that area too on & off at times. When you say it's a surgical invasive procedure not undertaken lightly. You mean for the Dr' s doing it or not undertaken lightly by the hospital I am under.? Kind Regards Jayne
Yes, liver issues of any kind can result in pain in the shoulder/upper back area as this is referred pain from the liver which has no pain receptors of its own. As with any invasive procedure, a biopsy is only done when necessary, by any doctor, or at any hospital, particularly in the case of a liver biopsy which carries the added risk of bleeding, which is why there is a lengthy rest on your side afterwards, to minimise the risk. Hopefully your own biopsy will give you positive and helpful results, and that you feel more comfortable soon.
