My husband, who is 62, was recently diagnosed with decompensated cirrhosis and has ascites and portal hypertension. The consultant told him he had a year left (maximum) if he drank again but not what the prognosis would be if he didn't drink again. He swears he won't but isn't at all well and for various reasons I need to know how many years he's likely to survive as I've read his life expectancy is limited now. Thanks.

Husband's life expectancy with decompensated cirrhosis
I think the best person to ask this question to is your husbands GP or consultant although this forum is very good I dont think any one could answer this . Try and stay strong I'm sure you will get plenty of advice on here.
Unfortunately, I doubt there is an actual answer to your question unfortunately. Everyone's circumstances are different and I know there are a few people here who have been in a similar position and are still here or have relatives that are still around. So the chance is there, but its not something that you can probably quantify. Stopping doing the damage at least creates the chance of survival. So, that at least should offer some hope too.
Good luck
Hi Spooks58
I’m 65 with alcohol cirrhosis, as cites and portal hypertension plus a recently fitted ileostomy bag which comes with it’s own problems but nothing the wife and I can’t handle.
Just trying to answer how long your partner will live I’ve had my cirrhosis and stuff, on the 28th of September for 17 years of course this means no drinking listening to the doctors and dieticians and of course you will have a lot of up and downs .
It’s not the easiest of life but I chose that when I started drinking, now I have three grandsons one I don’t see as many times as I want because he lives in America with my son and daughter in law but the other two I play with then spoil rotten then give them back to the parents 😂🤣 so I wish you two all I have and more , just look after yourselves 😃👍.

There is hope.
Dr told me the same in March 2017.
I quit drinking, did as I was told and now my consultant says I have normal life expectancy.
He said I will die WITH cirrhosis and not because of it. (with average luck).
Good morning Spooks58,
I can see our lovely forum members are sharing their positive personal experiences.
As they suggest, stopping alcohol is the crucial factor, but no-one can determine a life expectancy.
I have included a link to our information on cirrhosis -

Hi. Never give up hope. Consultants and doctors give worst case scenarios in case their wrong, which is often the case. I was rushed in to hospital April 2019...every day my family were told this may be the last. My liver has failed, kidneys too. Liver decomposed. Now I am feeling fine hoping for a transplant when I regress.
Your husband needs you right now. Positivity. If your finding things difficult contact me at cammeag at hotmail dot com if you want additional support. As has been said, there is quite a few wise heads on here to pick at.
