Abstaining from alcohol for 90 days and slipped up after day 50. Will it have harmed liver and undone all the good work ?

Due to finding mild afl my Dr advised abstaining from alcohol for 90 days. Was very proud to accomplish this especially after drinking two bottles a day for the last few years! Sadly after 50 days off I had a traumatic day and lapsed and drank 1 bottle . Will this have undone all my hard work ? I’m successfully back off after this 1 day but am now really worried.

Good afternoon CB23,

Welcome to this friendly supportive forum.

Congratulations on your abstinence, and well done on resuming this after your lapse.

Every day wothout alcohol will, in the long term, benefit your liver health.

If you are worried, may I suggest you speak with your doctors and they may be able to offer reassurance.

I am also sure our lovely forum members will be along shortly to share their experiences.

Best wishes,

Trust9

Thank you for your support - what a lovely, positive group to be surrounded by. Thank you it means a lot and I’m determined to reverse the slight fatty liver I have ( luckily not enlarged, no scarring etc..) and continue living an alcoholic free, happy life x

That is great to hear !

Welcome. Well done so far. These things happen. I doubt that the one day blip will have a detrimental effect on your end results. Apart from breaking the count and self-esteem you are back on track.

My bloods improved substantially in the first 60 days, but I had to continue on 14 months todate as I'd left it to late. I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in June19.

I got those warning signs four years ago when merely a social drinker. I cut back then but when my old drinking partner fell to cancer I ended up home with a bottle or two daily.

Take heed of the Doctors advice strange as it is.

Please don't go back to a bottle or two whatever improvement there maybe in your case. 90 days it will repair they say.

In my case not. 🤔

Good luck.

Hi feckle - what units of bottle are we all talking here - beer? Whisky? Just interested....

in reply toThreeSmiles

🤫 Between u & me. 1 bottle of Whiskey & water. Then changed to Vodka water & a dash of lime. Water didn't cut it, so I purchased 2 bottles. 1 4 2day and tomorrow. But 2 fecked up multiplication. More like a bottle and a half or 1 litre daily.

Never fell down. Tolerance sucked, so expensive. Shoulda bottled it👎

Awe, you did really well, a minor hiccup, put it behind you and move forward again. I think you need to have a plan in place for the next traumatic day you have... and there will be more so next time be prepared, have an alternative activity in place to turn to instead of hitting the bottle again. Do you have a hobby? walk or swim maybe ?... even a jigsaw puzzle, adult colouring books apparently are very theraputic. Have a think about what you might enjoy doing, get the tools you need in advance so you are prepared with your pick me up after a bad day but distracted from turning to the booze..

Hope it helps.

Couldn’t have said it better than Laura009 well done with what you already have done but there will be days that you think this is a good reason to hit the booze try to plan for them .

Good luck

Yes, I can't add much more but you have done so well, you've had one blip, now carry on going forward. Take care Lynne

Hi CB

You have done very well.

Never give up, this was just a blip, put it behind you and plough on.

No good regretting what you can't change.

Think forward with steely determination and that bottle will get further and further into the past until it becomes insignificant against all those days that you didn't have alcohol.

We will support you all the way.

All the very best to you.

Well, it’s not the best of news from the point of view of weaning yourself off alcohol, but what’s done is done so don’t worry. Saying that, try and prepare yourself for that next stressful event. Either you went out and bought alcohol this time or it was already in the house. If the latter, get rid.

Two bottles a day (wine?) is a lot. You probably have a form of alcohol dependence. What’s the plan at the end of the 90 days? It will be extremely difficult (OK, impossible) to drink moderately if you’ve been on 2 bottles a day for a long time. Think about giving up entirely.

I’m sounding a bit abrupt, but I was alcohol dependent (1 bottle of wine a day) and tried to cut down to no avail. Stopping was by far the easiest option, and one of the better things I’ve ever done.

To finish on a positive, well done on the 50 days. Not easy I know. I had many a relapse before finally quitting 13 months ago.

Thanks Coco, this is the first time I’ve abstained in 20 years and despite this blip I intend to continue alcohol free as I love that I control it now, it doesn’t control me and life is so much happier for me and those around. In the past this death would have resulted in drinking for days now I acknowledge that one bottle in comparison to those saved whilst abstaining is hopefully only a small mistake and I’m determined to continue the good work and hopefully reverse the damage done x

Well done again 👍 It’s definitely a mammoth task to get out of the habit of daily drinking, one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Sounds like you had a valid reason to take that drink. I’ve lost some family in the last year, but I’d been sober a few months so it was a bit easier to steer clear of alcohol.

If “all” you’ve got is fatty liver, which isn’t to be taken lightly, you’ll definitely reverse that by not drinking. I went from mild fatty liver to no detectable fat in a matter of months.

I guess your GP’s 90-day target was a first step, but (repeating myself) you have to build on that 90 days as there really is no safe/moderate/occasional drinking for the likes of us.

🙂👍

Thanks Coco, unbelievably I’ve got mild fatty liver which isn’t the best, but I honestly expected a lot worse ! I appreciate my life is now going to be completely different and alcohol free . My first step is to hopefully reverse the fatty liver and continue every day alcohol free. It’s quite exciting in a strange way. Have a great day x

Yes, exciting is the word. You and I can count our lucky stars. You honestly won’t miss the booze and will wonder why you didn’t give up years earlier 👍

As you can see you have many friends on this forum who do not judge your minor blip as we all have weaknesses of somekind and all not alcohol related but never the less there are a weakness!

Your first 90 days of no alcohol was such a brilliant achievement so put this little weakness to the back of your mind and aim for the Stars .... remember you have our support !

Love Trishi

Mistakes happen thats human nature, dont beat yourself up about what's been and gone as many have said, its just a blip. The most important thing is your not carrying on that blip so keep your chin up and carry on doing the good work you know your capable of. Wishing you all the best CB keep fighting.

Hi Ash. How are you doing?

Hi Laura, I'm very well thank you hows yourself? I've lost another 6lbs this week I'm buzzing to be honest 😁 so since November 2nd I've lost nearly 5 stone I cant believe it but I'm doing it, think living like monk is paying off lol, my family and friends cant believe the turnaround but I still have a lot more I want to lose but I'm well and truly getting there. I dont want to sound like I'm floating my own boat to be honest but the weight loss and 13 weeks clean and sober I have to say I feel the best I have in many a year 👍. Thanks for asking Laura and hope your doing good as well. Take care
