Hi everyone I have been prescribed a medication for blood pressure by my gp called ramapryl. Are we allowed to take this medication. Thanks x
Question : Hi everyone I have been... - British Liver Trust
Question
Hi Alley
Yes I am on Ramipril 10mg. BUT I am post TP. I am also prescribed Amlodipine. Both for high blood pressure.
Not a great deal of info but I found these two excerpts:-
“For people with liver problems: Ramipril should be used with caution if you have liver problems. This drug can worsen your liver function and change your electrolyte levels. For people with low white blood cells: Ramipril can cause low white blood cell counts.“
“Patients with hepatic impairment (see section 5.2)
In patients with hepatic impairment, treatment with ramipril must be initiated only under close medical supervision and the maximum daily dose is 2.5mg ramipril.”
Just double check with your doctor !
Miles
Thank you for your reply. I have decided that unless this medication, or any other for blood pressure is 100 percent safe, I will not take it.
I have done some research and it all points to liver toxicity so no thanks very much.
I specifically asked if the gp had checked that it was safe for me to take and he said yes. Tomorrow I have to go get my bloods done but at 8am I am going to ring for an appointment to actually physically see a gp to discuss this further. So, if anyone knows which is the best blood pressure medication to take, in terms of safety for the liver, please let me know.
Thanks everyone x
Hi Alley, like Miles I too am post transplant and was prescribed ramipril for high blood pressure unfortunately for me it gave me an annoying tickly cough so it was changed to losartan, I don’t think you will find a medication that is 100% safe but sometimes the risk of damage caused by high blood pressure is much worse than that of the medication, well that’s what I have been told as high blood pressure has contributed to the damage to my kidneys, I hope you get some reassurance from your gp, good luck xx
Hi Kate
Snap on the Ramipril then except you had a cough - but I had/have a cough too! Thought it was just usual wintery thing. I’ll have to see now!
Also Snap on the kidney damage. That’s irreversible from what I understand 👎.
How’s about Heart Block (Mobitz 1 & 2)? That is attributed to high BP in me as well!
🎼Ah Well🎼
I completely agree re the 100% bit. I have to say I always follow the advice given - that doesn’t mean I don’t think about it or check it but I think you can leave yourself open to all sorts of issues if you don’t follow the advice given - and at least see how it goes. By all means shout if things start to go awry.....
Miles
Hi Miles, it’s a weird little tickly cough worse when you lie down, and I agree with following the advice given, you have to trust what they say/do otherwise you drive yourself crazy overthinking everything but do question things if you are unsure or don’t feel right, hope you are doing ok 😊
Just a notable.
Interesting about the cough with Rampiril. A few years ago this prescription was amongst many my husband was put on by his Cardiologist. But he was pulled off due to his face swelling up. Like an allergic reaction.
I believe that it was either Perindopril or Bisoprolol that became the substitute.
Hubby was on both anyways and neither had that same adverse side effect for him.
Not aware of the effects on the liver with any of the above.
But it seems most meds have them to varying degrees unfortunately.
Thanks lucky.
My cough comes and goes so I’m not sure what’s happening tbh. I think I’ve said on here before but whilst you can generally find out possible interactions between tablets A and B you can’t find out about effects of A + B + C etc. So it’s seems a bit all suck it and see - and of course it varies from person to person!
Ah well 😀
Excuse me cough cough? Or more than likely
cough cough is used to subtly imply that you know something that someone else doesn't. 😜
Hi Alley,
We would always suggest it is best to discuss any medication concerns with the doctor that prescribed it, they have access to your medical records and are best placed to safely advise you.
Best wishes

Thank you. I expect that the gp had checked my records before prescribing the ramipril for me. I have been to see an actual gp today and she is also unsure that I should take this medication. She is trying to get in touch with my hepatolagist to find out from him if I am ok to take them.
Thing is, I really need treatment for the blood pressure. It was raised again today, 175 over 100. Said that it wasn't urgent, that I don't need treatment today. I am going to try and contact the hepatolagist secretary and ask directly if I am ok to take this medication.
Thank you.
Hi guys had the all clear from hepatolagist to take the ramipril, so started them today. I will keep you updated. Take care and be well all of you xx
