Vomiting large blood clots

Hubby woke up at 3am and vomited massive blood clots. Six hours later, nothing more.

He’d been doing a huge amount of work around the house and I wondered if this could have caused the bleed. He had an endoscopy when diagnosed in February and was told no varices. His blood work has all returned to normal with exception of bilirubin (slightly elevated).

Anyone else experience something similar, a bleed that stops on its own? Hubby really doesn’t want to go to hospital with all the covid cases. He’d rather wait until Monday and call the doctor for advice.

If he has vomited what looks like blood clots then this is a medical emergency and he MUST go to hospital. My hubby only vomited twice when he was having a massive variceal bleed & could have died from what were 7 burst varices.

Variceal bleeding is described as looking like coffee granules, hubbies was a mixture of clots, red wine coloured blood and bright red blood.

This isn't something to mess about with or wait with this is straight to A&E.

I was going to mention the coffee granules, but Katie beat me to it earlier. When I had my variceal bleed I was sick about three times during the evening, and then again later on in the night. I was terribly thirsty but this only made the vomiting worse. By the next morning, my wife called an ambulance.

Portal Hypertension is a serious condition as pressure builds up in the portal vein. This then causes the varices to burst. There is some useful information about Portal Hypertension over on the BLT’s main website: britishlivertrust.org.uk/in....

I wouldn’t wait for other varices to burst. As Katie advises, call an ambulance.

This is something not to wait with i'm afraid. This needs to be checked out as a matter of urgency. So, get him down to A&E as soon as you can.

This is a medical emergency. We would suggest to call an ambulance immediately.

I took hubby to hospital yesterday. He’s having IVs of drugs to control bleeding, transfusion and endoscopy is scheduled. So frustrating that I can’t be with him at this time.

I was vomiting bright red blood with big clots. I was refusing to go to hospital because I didn’t want to die alone. By the time I got to hospital my blood pressure was 59/38. They managed to drag me back from the brink with two blood transfusions and then banded eight varices. Because of Covid I had no visitors but had been so delirious that this was the least of my worries. After copious amounts of antibiotics and another bag of blood I was well enough to go home.

Take it seriously.
