Hi Milo. It's a frightener isn't it?

It points to the fact that if you are overweight even moderate drinking of alcohol is dangerous.

So the number weekly of units considered to be"safe" for Joe Average, in the case of an overweight person are not safe at all, in fact it sounds like they could be positively dangerous.

Hi

It's a wake up call. By the way, you have both done really well. In some cases like my Mum's was the fact she wasn't listened to. She had had a niggly cough and we kept going back to Drs who kept fobbing her off , she was losing weight, had about 10 drinks per year and had never been obese. Anyway one Dr finally sent her for an x-ray, came back and said it had nodules on her lungs, she was a very independent lady, to see her going down hill was heartbreaking, they supposedly referred her for a CT, the Dr forgot to send it, I got on the phone and I wouldn't let go until she had an appointment, she had one for Friday 27th August 2010, by the Tuesday 31st myself and my Dad called an ambulance, we found out in A and E that my dear Mum had pancreatic, liver and lung cancer. She was admitted and very sadly passed away on the evening of the 1st September. We were heartbroken, I don't know how we got through it. The consultant said even if her Dr had listened to her it wouldn't have made any difference , I turned round and said yes but it would have been nice if she had at least been listened to. I'm sorry to post such a sad message. I think what I'm trying to say is if you don't feel right then please do not leave your dr's surgery until they refer you . If it's something and nothing in the end then that's great but isn't it best if the Drs just make sure. Love and hugs to you all Lynne xxxx

That is truly a sad story.. ☹️.

I bet that everone of us on here has not been listened to at some point or other. I haven’t. It took me 6 months at QEHB - yes my idol 👍 Hospital - to get a CT scan for my abdominal pain and lump. And guess what I was just told just 4 weeks ago that the CT scan showed a big incisional hernia - from my TP last year. I know it may have been my fault for lifting something I shouldn’t have - can’t remember that though tbh! Feeling a bit let down to be honest. But hey ho .. you (I 😁) just have to muster on and wait. They say they’re not going to do anything about it until I recover from my back op on Sunday...that’s life 😁, but I did agree with them that for me is higher priority. And as freddytgebig says at least we’re here 👍👍.

Good luck for Sunday. I'm not surprised you feel let down. Please let us know how you go on on Sunday. Best wishes Lynne

I agree Alf its shocking news which I've shared on my Facebook page! I do however wonder how many readers will take note? I'm guessing hardly any unless they already have liver or being overweight issue's!

The thing is though that a person can be overweight and feel perfectly healthy and have no idea that they might have NAFLD and think that they are perfectly ok to drink the "safe" recommended weekly units. Scary!

I do agree! Maybe fibroscans should become the norm for everyone over the age of 20 -30

I had fibro scan two years ago result was 31; but my liver doc says it’s basically means nowt, and you can’t trust it. Funny though because the staff who did it at QE in Birmingham were shocked at the result, but in Coventry nhs trust their not interested.

That's really sad to hear Lynne.

Maybe, as the consultant said that by that time it wouldn't have made any difference but had they listened to her and diagnosed earlier at least she would have been able to have received medication and care to make her last days easier!

It was a similar case to my mother-in -law. Had her GP listened (to a woman who had only been to the doctors 4 times in 30 years!) and put 2 and 2 together when she told him her symptoms then she wouldn't have gone another year before diagnosis and to be told that her condition was too advanced to treat.

It's heart breaking when something like this happens to a loved one.

Very sad story, Alf. I can only imagine your sadness and frustration. 😥

in reply to alfredthegreat

Yes, it is , you feel so helpless, I wanted to be able make her better but I couldn't. We were friends, sisters and mother and daughter all rolled into one. I was very close to my Dad too. He had excellent treatment in intensive care, he had pneumonia and sepsis, they were brilliant. I will never get over losing my parents but I have learned to live with it. I have so many happy memories and that's what i have to hold on to and no-one can take those away. Love and hugs to you and yours. Lynne xxxx

Thank you so much for your kind words. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so sorry to read what you went through, it's heartbreaking. Yes, you are right, we should keep telling these stories. Let's hope a few Drs are reading this. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

But what about the next sub headline.

Heavy alcohol drinkers who also smoke cannabis 'may slash their odds of getting killer liver diseases such as cirrhosis by up to 55%'

Believable tabloid news or not?

My Doctor has advised me to stop drinking. It's going to be a big change for me.

I've been with that Doctor for the last 25 years.
