I have been feeling breathless and unusually tired of late with episodes of clamminess and heart pounding. My latest blood panel revealed that my MCH is well below normal and I have iron deficient anemia (anaemia for the Brits.) MCH stands for "mean corpuscular hemoglobin." MCH levels refer to the average amount of hemoglobin found in the red blood cells in the body. Hemoglobin is a protein in the blood that allows red blood cells to deliver oxygen to the cells and tissues in the body. No wonder I've been feeling rather crummy.
I have been so diligent following a plant based protein diet that I have neglected my iron intake so it's Popeye diet for me with lots of cooked spinach! The reason for plant based is to keep nitrogen levels low to avoid the dreaded hepatic encephalopathy. My doctor has suggested I really up my intake of iron rich foods and we'll check it in a month. Thought it was worth a mention. Oh, and don't drink tea with or right after your meal as it inhibits the absorption of iron.
Cheers all, Liz
