Have read a few posts recently from members who are having a bad day or a bad week and thought these words were very apt x

Yes, thank you for your poem. Nearly three years post transplant I no longer suffer from such problems but I can certainly empathise.

When I was ill I started to write poems, mostly as a way to deal with the seriousness of my situation. The following is the first I wrote. I hope that it may be of use but it is rather serious so please do not read if the subject of death is upsetting for you. That said, I know at least one person who found it very helpful in their darkest times...

A good man knows how to die

He sees no darkness

Only light

A good man knows how to die

He knows what death is

He feels its beauty

Understands the nature of its release

A good man knows how to die

He never seeks it

But welcomes it when it comes

A good man knows how to die

He learns how by living a good life

A good man knows how to die

He knows that what he leaves undone

Will be done by others

That the things he did not see

Will be seen by others

And as death steals over him

The knowledge of this wraps him up like a warm blanket

A good man knows how to die

And as his death approaches, his regrets flutter away

Like a beautiful butterfly transformed from an ugly grub

A good man knows how to die

And as he breathes his last breath

The pain and anguish of his life leave his face

And it is reborn

Yes, a good man knows how to die

And I am a good man

This is so apt for my husband at the moment. He is on palliative care in a hospice with lung cancer. He is ready to go and pain free. He has had a good life and is accepting.

Many thanks jacobsmum for a beautiful poem. It echoes my sentiments exactly. I hope you don't mind, but I have copied it to read when I'm feeling low.
