I have chronic cirrhosis (compensated) and has to leave my full time job due to high absence. Although they supported me I know they wanted me gone and the pressure was too much.

I'm wondering where I stand on benefits in the UK? Does anyone here claim?

Hi There

I tried but had no luck but everyone's circumstances are different I wish you well.

Go to your local citizens advice, or your local council's Welfare Rights Service.

Agree with Richard64, if you make an appointment with either Citizen's Advice or your council welfare rights office they will look at your circumstances and advice which if any benefits you 'might' be entitled to apply for and help with application. If you go it alone it can end up a battle.

My hubby was awarded both ESA in the Support Group and eventually Personal Independence Payment - Enhanced Daily Living and Basic Rate Mobility. I am able to claim my National Insurance as his carer (National Insurance Carers Credits).

It's not about your condition but how your condition actually affects you day to day, what limitations it creates and what additional needs you have for a number of 'descriptors'.

I can whole heartedly also recommend the small membership fee to join the Benefits and Work Website. Their member guides take you through the process step by step so that you provide sufficient evidence to support your claim. benefitsandwork.co.uk/

We had to go to appeal tribunal at hubbies first application after he scored zero at the face-to-face assessment.

Best wishes, Katie

Hi there.sorry to hear that. I managed to work till December last year had a transplant in February this year and going back as a gas engineer in July I was reluctantly going to say hopefully.but I don’t want to I’m also lucky in that I don’t need to .however work has been good to me paying me in full even though my sick pay ran out last year.ive just turned 50 in march and I need to do something.but getting benefits will be dependent on wether you finished and told them your done or that you were either sacked or they let you go.personaly I’ve always thought that you shouldn’t burn your bridges and never ever hand your notice in and let them let you go or you’ve no chance of benefits as you’ve made yourself jobless intentionally even though your sick.hope it works out for you. Ps.when I go back and find out I can’t do the job anymore I’m back on the sick till they make a decision about me.it may be hard as it’ll only be statutory sick pay but I won’t be packing it in.paul

I have just been diagnosed with cirrhosis & I was advised by my local authority to go online to claim help with housing costs via the DWP & universal credit. It's a start. Please type it into your search & it's an easy process to set up a claim. I did it & attended a couple of appointments face to face at my local Job Centre. Just take as much documentation as evidence as you can. I am on half pay that ends early next month & I got a payment from them this month. Don't be put off, I have been treated with nothing but respect & empathy. Best wishes & positive vibes to you xxx

It’s unlikely you will be awarded Disability but you are entitled to Universal Credit... The system is very unfair as you will find out.

It’s a simple process applying online

Apply for both and get advise regards filling in the disability forum as has been mentioned above. There are also some good videos on YouTube to watch from people whom have gone through the application process... definitely worth watching.

Unfortunately disability is a very long process (+/-6 months) and normally involves appeals which adds to the time. I’m assuming your doctors have stated you aren’t fit for work... they will check that right of the bat.

Good luck 😬
