Liver and gastro problems

Hi, I haven't been diagnosed with liver disease but have many symptoms. Last July after 3 very alcohol fused days in Spain I developed a cough without a cold. I went to see the GP and got antibiotics which I was reluctant to take and they didn't work, from the start I believed it was coming from my stomach as it was wors when I lay down you could hear crackling and at times when I was breathing I sounded like darth vader. I was coughing up stuff too. In the bank of my mind I thought it could be something to do with my liver but I really hoped it wasn't but I was sure it was coming from my stomach and the usual tablets for that didn't work either.

In the last 4 weeks I've been eating clean and many of my liver symptoms have started to clear up, the main one being the sweating which always scared me the most. All these symptoms started after a 4 month drinking binge and an accidental paracetamol over dose (irregular periods, oily orange stools, pain, sweating, itching) pain in my upper right quadrant, my side and back began to stop too. With having this cough and coughing up stuff for so long and now it's much better, almost gone it's led me back to my liver again. It's wonderful the symptoms have massively eased but it's a concern that I was having so many symptoms. My liver function tests have always been normal and an ultrasound came back normal although she did say it was hard to get a good view of the liver as my bmi was 35 at the time. I still believe I may have early cirrohis and its been missed. The other thing was that just after the accidental overdose I did a round of ivf responded well to the drugs which should have had a good outcome but when they went to do the egg collection there were no eggs and the doctors were baffled as to why, they were absolutely stumped as its very rare for this to happen when the roundooks like its going well. My first round went well and it was before the overdose and I got pregnant but had a miscarriage. I believe its all linked. My symptoms are much worse after taking paracetamol or alcohol and I've cut out both. I feel like I've hit a dead end and not knowing much about ivf or the liver my GP refuses to do further testing.

Hi Liberty82,

You paint a complicated picture and nobody here would be able to give you any idea to what is going on health-wise. That is all for your GP to deal with as s/he will know you, your medical history and your current circumstances.

This is not a medical forum and nobody would be able to give you anything other than support and encouragement. There are many members of the forum who have a great deal of experience and knowledge of living with liver disease.

However, you are clearly concerned about your health and especially your liver. Because of your circumstances perhaps it would be helpful to contact our Helpline where you will be able to discuss your worries with an experienced and qualified nurse.

The British Liver Trust Helpline is a lifeline for anyone affected by a liver condition. Call 0800 652 7330 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday (not bank holidays) or email helpline@britishlivertrust.org.uk (emails can be sent at any time and are answered during helpline hours

Wishing you well.

Thanks so much. I'll try to call tomorrow.

I have mentioned this before but, your symptoms seem more like pancreas issues than liver issues. That being said im not a doctor and could be wrong about that. But after all the testing and ultrasounds nothing this far has pointed to your liver. Sweating is also not a common symptom associated with cirrhosis.

Thanks phoenix, when i had the ultrasound my pancreas has come back as normal. I know sweating is not one of the usual signs but it does come up now and again when researching liver issues and I know a few others have mentioned sweating. It's just that if I take alcohol or paracetamol my liver area aches for the next few days and the sweating is so much worse. When I say pain it's not massively uncomfortable it's just kind of letting me know 'I'm here'. I do appreciate all your help and I know you are very knowledgable when it comes to the liver. Can I ask that do you think its often thay lft tests come back as normal when there are issues or is this fairly rare?

Thankfully the blt is coming here in a few weeks so I hope to get a fibroscan. When I last went thru couldn't get a clear picture due to my bmi. I've lost around 16 lbs since then so I hope it's enough to make a difference. Maybe I'll lose a bit more before then.

Hi Liberty82,

So very sorry about your miscarriage.

If your GP seems not to be listening to your needs is it possible to see a different doctor?

Wishing you the best,

Mary

Thanks Mary, I've just moved GPS as they neglected my hypothyroidism when I was pregnant which may have caused my miscarriage even though I knew that I should have been taking more thyroxine. They also left me for 8 years with neuropathy even after more than 10 appts complaining of pain which eventually I was diagnosed with nerve damage when I saw a neurologist privately. I moved GPS recently after being with the others my whole life and tbh this one isnt any better. At least my last gp refereed me for an ultrasound but I ended up not being able to attend due to bereavement. This new one won't refer me even though I've a host of symptoms, if my LFTs are normal that is enough for them. I worried to move again cuz I went through a nightmare moving from one gp to another. Today I've had an awful bile taste in my mouth all day. I used to get it sometimes after drinking alcohol but today it's just come out of the blue. I'm just going to continue trying to be healthy and hope that I can turn things around x
