Ascities in babies

I have a friend who has not left hospital since her baby was born, (now 5 months ago) The baby has a very large belly, now measuring 49cms and is showing signs of capillaries rupturing under the skin. She has now been diagnosed as having cirrhosis also. They have taken her off diuretics as they were not working and not giving any alternative but insist they will not drain the fluid due to infection room possibilities. Has anyone got any first hand knowledge of this and are the parents right in pushing for the fluid to be drained?

Hi Tandi, the British Liver Trust is primarily geared towards adult liver conditions rather than those of children. There is a children's liver foundation who would be better placed to support your friends as they seek appropriate guidance for their little one. What a shame she is so poorly.

Children's Liver Disease Foundation page is at:- childliverdisease.org/

Hope the wee one improves. So sad to hear of one so young with one of these horrid liver conditions.

My son was born with a liver disease, has your friends baby been referred to one of the specialist paediatric liver centres? I would be pushing for that, my son was 9 months old before our local finally admitted they couldn’t figure out why his liver wasn’t working properly and transferred us to Birmingham children’s where he was diagnosed instantly with something our local had already ruled out!

Also do get in touch with the children’s liver disease foundation, they are fab!
