I'd be wary of taking cod liver oil. It contains high levels of vitamin A which can damage the liver when taken to excess. When I had hepatitis I took a Coenzyme Q10 capsule daily to help boost energy levels. Coenzyme Q10 levels in the body drop with age. I also took 4,000 IU of vitamin D when I didn't get much sun. Getting vitamin D through sun exposure however remains the best way of getting it. Both are okay to take if your liver is impaired according to hepatologist Dr Melissa Palmer in her book:

Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide To Hepatitis and Liver Disease:

"Vitamin A is found in animal livers and green and orange fruits and vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, carrots, and cantaloupe. Animal sources of vitamin A tend to contain much greater quantities of this vitamin (six times as much) than vegetable sources. Therefore, it is advised that people with liver disease avoid cod liver oil and animal liver. Vegetables may be consumed freely. However, the practice of daily juicing of large quantities of fruits and/or vegetables should be avoided in people with severe liver disease.

Vitamin E, also known as tocopherol, acts as an antioxidant in the body. It protects red blood cells and bodily tissues against damage. Some studies have shown that supplementation with vitamin E may protect the liver from free radical-mediated injury arising from excessive alcohol intake. Therefore, people who regularly drink alcohol and, in particular, people with alcoholic liver disease, may benefit from supplementation with vitamin E."

Since my liver came good (it took 17 months so it was a long healing process) I've continued to take Coenzyme Q10 & vitamin D plus I've added 4 Blackmores Omega Brain fish oil capsules daily which contain four times as much DHA as standard fish oil. Fish oil doesn't help the heart like some people believe but the extra DHA in the Omega Brain might help the brain based on my experience. My memory & brain function feel like they've improved. Whether or not it's due to the extra DHA in the Omega Brain fish oil capsules or because my liver is back to normal (or a combination of both) I don't know but whenever I've taken Omega Brain in the past I've subjectively felt that my brain worked a little better plus my good cholesterol level rose.

I wouldn't take fish oil though if my liver was damaged. When I felt sick with hepatitis I figured the less strain I put on my liver having to process supplements the better.

Ask your doctor about a dietitian. Different diagnosis, medication require different diets.
