Waiting to find out what's wrong

Hope it's ok to post this here, I don't really have a question I'm just worried and frustrated!

After a week of flu symptoms (now gone) I went to my GP on Tuesday due to dark urine and a total lack of appetite.

I got blood tests done on Wednesday, and as my liver function is deranged and my eyes were looking yellow I was admitted to hospital.

They couldn't find out what was wrong, and as I'm clinically well I was discharged on Friday, even though my LFT was worsening (I'm not complaining, I wasn't getting any treatment in hospital anyway).

While in hospital they tested me for hepatitis A, B, C and D, paracetamol toxicity and gave me an ultrasound, and everything came back negative/the ultrasound was fine.

I'm back in tomorrow for another LFT.

Over the weekend I've felt fine, apart from tiredness and unbearable itching, but my skin is getting really yellow. It's really worrying seeing your skin change colour and knowing your liver is getting worse without knowing why!

The doctor thinks it's viral, but other than that they have no idea.

Interesting that they cannot find anything. The yellow colour can be from elevated levels of bilirubin, an indication of liver disease, as is the itching. I am not medical but have been recently transplanted. Have you been asked about your alcohol consumption? There are other possibilities and they ran tests for hepatitis and paracetamol toxicity. Interesting that the ultrascan found nothing. Good luck, antihistamines such as fexofenadine and Dermol in the shower with Zerobase cream will alleviate the itching. Good luck and I hope all will be resolved.

Thanks for your reply! They did ask about alcohol, but I think because my consumption is pretty average (couple of glasses of wine a week) and the ultrasound didn't show any damage they aren't looking into that angle much.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring some answers and I'll look into those creams you've recommended as the itching is driving me crazy!

Did they scan your gallbladder? When my gallbladder was inflamed 10 years ago it caused dark urine, yellowish eyes and deranged lft's. It was also very painful with referred pain in the middle of my back. Good luck, I hope you get some answers soon. Deb

Itching stuff is on prescription. All the best for tomorrow.

Kcass33 I stumbled upon your post and thought I would mention Gilbert’s Syndrome. I was diagnosed last month and had all the same symptoms you had. On the other hand I’ve been battling with alcohol addiction for many years so when I rushed to the ER with jaundice I thought my liver is failing. Despite heavy drinking, some elevated LFT’s and an US to diagnose fatty liver they couldn’t piece together why my jaundice was still present and indirect/unconjugated bilirubin was still high. After further research I came across GS and asked my hepatologist to complete the gene test for GS and sure enough it was positive.

My post is probably too late to see but I’m hoping you got it all sorted out. Best of luck. 😀
