Running not recommended post transplant

Hi

My French hep specialist said that aqua gym and exercising in the gym were great ways to get/keep fit but he didn’t want me running. He says it causes too much vibration for the liver. I understand the logic but has aanyone else been given similar advice? Looks like no couch to 5 k for me 😅

I wasn’t given it as advice, but it does make sense to me. Whenever I tried running in the early years after transplant it always made me feel very nauseous. Now with my situation I just haven’t got the energy and my knees are knackered. The gym is good, swimming is always recommend after the first year or cycling.

Hi

I just checked on the British transplant games and they have 3km marathon and 100m races just as 2 examples.

I don't know how long post tx you have to be but this event is closely monitored.

Hi,

I had a liver transplant in March 2016.

Since then playing table tennis, I have competed twice at the annual British Transplant Games. Won bronze both times ( I'll keep going until I get gold ! )

Table tennis is a pretty energetic sport and definitely not a problem for my transplant team as they have to sign a form declaring me fit to compete.

However, one member of our team is Ellie Lacey who is an example for anyone considering what life can be following a transplant. She was competing as a runner in the British Transplant Games within months of her liver transplant.

Here is a link to her website.

Thanks for sharing that Jim. The post about writing to the donor family has given me a clear idea of what to write as I've been postponing it for so long now due to not knowing how to express my gratitude without somehow upsetting them.

Right then. It must be that my dr realises lm no Good anyway😂

I was never given that advice. When I tried jogging at 10 months post tx, was getting sharp chest pains each time not to mention running out of breath in less than a minute. No more chest pain now (22 months post) but I still struggle to catch my breath especially after sprinting on the treadmill.

Hi Isabelle, for me running wasn't possible for a good 6 months posts transplant as the jarring made everything a bit too sore. However, once that settled down running was no problem. I suspect early after transplant its probably not ideal but I don't see any reason why after 6/9/12 months there would be any problem. You just have to take it at your own pace. Try it and see how you get on. May be do a double check with your consultant too. It does seem a bit strange advice given the number of competitors at the various transplant games in the running events that have had liver transplants.

I don’t know why. It mus5 be said that I still sometimes get pain from the area around the scar. Not the liver but the tissue.

I took part in the 5k at the games this year and I was 1year post, no issues or anything mentioned by transplant team and they had to complete the medical form, apart from contact sports go for it girl!
