How can I have Cirrhosis yet have normal liver function test results
Cirrhosis : How can I have Cirrhosis yet... - British Liver Trust
Cirrhosis
If your cirrhosis is fairly stable then you won't have elevated or reduced LFT's since it's the remaining working bits of your liver which emit most of the substances tested for in Liver Function Tests. If your liver isn't inflamed then you won't have elevated inflammation markers like AST, ALT. My hubby has cirrhosis (due to burned out Auto-Immune Hepatitis) - diagnosed April 2012 and his LFT's return pretty much normal all the time. He is classified as stable and compensated. Thank fully none of the major more serious symptoms present (no jaundice, ascites, barely visible varices at last endoscopy after lots of banding, minor HE only).

I know absolutely nothing about my Cirrhosis which was caused by my very many medications I was on, as I have a lot of medical problems. I don’t remember very much of what they tell me at all mainly due again to my meds. It just seemed very strange to be told my lft’s were normal when I had Cirrhosis. Thank you for the explanation
Exactly correct
As long as your liver is coping you would not necessarily have lfts outside the norm.
My husband had normal lfts until well towards the end of being compensated. Once he became decompensated then all lfts went haywire.
Have you been given a diagnosis for your cirrhosis?
Yes, about 2 years ago. I have memory problems due mainly to my meds I’m told. Side effects. I just thought it was strange to have normal lft’s with Cirrhosis. Thank you for your time
It might be a good idea to take a friend, a note book and pen next time you have an appointment so you can write down any info they give you. In the meantime keep that notebook with you so anytime you think of someting you want to ask, you can jot it all down ready for when you go.
All the best
Laura
Thank you, I will 👍
Yes, I do that because there's no way I'd remember everything they told me or what I wanted to ask. Take care. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx
Hi
I dont know but I had same result from blood tests, over a number of years. Then told my Cirrhosis was "contained", but recent fibroscan showed it much worse. I have never been a drinker, so am puzzled as to how I ended up with problem. My own theory is it was possibly due to taking amiltryptaline for many years.
You can get cirrhosis if you have the genetic condition Haemochromatosis this is rarely found but is a very common condition and easily found through a blood test to see if your ferritin levels are high, it's also known as iron overload , not all Drs know about it so don't do tests for it .
