Welcome to the forum where you will be able to get advice and support from others with experience of liver disease.

However, no matter how well intentioned, this is not a medical forum and none of the members are qualified to diagnose or give specific medical advice.

Forum users are advised to NOT post test results or scans and request an interpretation from other members. This is clearly stated in the guidelines to both the British Liver Trust forum and HealthUnlocked. ( see link below )

Test results can vary according to both the individual’s whole health and the specific laboratory / medical team analysing the results. To avoid misinterpretation and undue concerns, results can only properly be understood by a qualified medical practitioner with full knowledge of your unique medical history and circumstances.

Please don’t be discouraged from using the forum as there are members with a great deal of understanding and knowledge of living with liver disease as a patient or carer. They will be able to give you the benefit of that experience with understanding and empathy that can only come from those with first hand involvement.

Best wishes

Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide To Hepatitis and Liver Disease:

"Most liver diseases are characterized by greater ALT elevations than AST elevations with two important exceptions. Both cirrhosis and alcohol abuse are associated with higher AST levels than ALT levels, often in a ratio of approximately 2:1."

If the above identifies why your liver is inflamed then stop drinking alcohol for good & adopt a healthy lifestyle. Gradually get your weight into the normal healthy body mass index range. Eat a healthy diet. Exercise regularly. Even if you have cirrhosis if it's in an early enough stage you could live a normal life span free of serious problems if you do everything right. If you don't have cirrhosis then your liver can eventually repair the damage. Get an ultrasound and FibroScan done to determine how damaged your liver is.

If alcohol is not the reason for your raised ALT & AST then a specialist needs to determine the cause.

Again quoting from Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide To Hepatitis and Liver Disease:

"Elevations of the transaminases occur as a result of so many causes that they give the doctor only a vague clue of the diagnosis. Additional testing is required in order to determine more precisely what is wrong with the liver. Some possible causes of elevated transaminase levels include the following:

• Viral hepatitis

• A fatty liver

• Alcoholic liver disease

• Drug/medication-induced liver disease

• Autoimmune hepatitis

• Herbal toxicity

• Genetic liver diseases

• Liver tumors

• Heart failure

• Strenuous exercise"
