ALT and GGT - alcohol related

Hi I’m new to the site. I’m 45, female and yes a heavy drinker so I’ve done this to myself. My most recent blood tests showed ALT was 59 (upper limit 34) and GGT 49. How bad is this? I’ve stopped alcohol now. Apart from the alcohol I eat really well and exercise daily, BMI of 21. I know no-one can give medical advice but can I reverse this, and how long might it take? My GP is sending me for an ultrasound on my gallbladder, will the check my liver then too? I’d be very grateful to hear experiences.

Edited to add, these recent bloods were done because I’ve had upper right quadrant pain for 5 months.

Hopefully you've caught this soon enough and going alcohol free will go a long way to helping your liver. Your ultrasound should reveal if you've done any damage or not - the ALT and GGT are just showing that your liver is inflamed and grumbling so hopefully it hasn't gone further than that.

We can't say how long before you notice a difference but sobriety will hopefully bring down those figures.

Ashley is our resident pin up boy for having been there, got the t-shirt and come back again. If you'll take this as a pure complement Ash you look stunning in your new profile pic (I was going to say 'well hot' but it's my wedding anniversary tomorrow and that might be a tad inappropriate). Keep up the good work Ashley you are a sparkling example. :)

Not far away .... Norwich. Definately getting the bulk of the hot weather .. but l love it 🌞

Delia Smith country then, yes I love the hot weather as well, were just not equipped like country's who get it year in year out, when you go abroad the hotels and villas all air conditioning, marble floors, pools, shady spots etc....my place has thick carpets, an IKEA fan, bathtub and a dilapidated bush (its the neighbours 😄) but still you get my drift lol yeh make sure he's got right guard handy when he gets in, but your hubby got the right idea flying round a race track you'll get some real breeze there 👍🏍

Hi. Well done on the stopping drinking. You will find over time your liver will recover providing you carry on doing what your doing. I have non alcoholic fatty liver disease and both my results are currently double yours, on meds, but that’s stable for me. They’ve been as high as 200 ALT and 98 GGT. I’ve never been a big drinker and when those results were found I was 38 (I’m now 52) and the last drink I’d had was one glass of wine on Xmas day 10 months previously! Doctors thought I was lying when I said I didn’t drink! I wasn’t even overweight (then, age has happened). Good luck with your ultra sound.

Gosh I thought that was mine as just joined and so very similar to mine. Good to know your on medication and is helping. I have a scan in two weeks which should clarify what’s occurring.

You can ask the radiologist to check your liver if he nice or her..but it's usually a separate ultrasound
