GGT Testing

Would GGT normally be tested when investigating potentially liver problems as part of a liver function test or is it something specific that the Dr would need to ask for?

Yes, a standard liver function test will definitely include GGT.

A standard panel of liver function tests should include a GGT level but it is always worth checking that it has been included.

Thanks for your answers both. I have my blood test at 3pm so will ask the question - but it sound like the answer will hopefully be yes!

Just had my blood tests and was advised by the nurse that GGT was not included and will only be tested if any of the enzyme test are abnormal. As my previous test a couple of months ago was fine she wouldn’t be doing it today.

Now I am worried that they are missing something as everywhere I read it seems GGT is the key test for discovering potential liver damage caused by alcohol

Any thoughts?

GGT is also a sign for Alpha 1 Anti Tryspin Deficiency, which my hubby has. It was missed initially because all other LFT's were ok but CT showed cirrhosis Once it was discovered that he had an issue with GGT ,and doesn't drink, they then looked further into his situation. DIagnosed then with cirrhosis due to AIAD.

Eventually transplanted

I have had high GGT since 2006 but despite being almost teetotal my GP practice now dismiss it as 'normal for patient' saying that it is probably due to a fatty liver although an ultrasound scan did not show much fattiness. So although if you drink a lot it will be taken as indicative of liver damage, if you don't it may get ignored - despite being a bad sign, especially if other liver results are within range. Freddie76's comments on Alpha 1 Anti Trypsin Deficiency are important especially for anyone with adult onset asthma. Unfortunately doctors consider this so rare that they tend not to look for it until you have serious lung and/or liver damage.

Good afternoon,

This is a disappointing for you. I presume you will be told what the results are for the tests you have had done and if there is any issue they will then check the GGT. It might be worth discussing with your GP whether the GGT can be included each time you do have a liver function test.

It ahould always be on that test. But some GPs dont ask for it. When i last did blood work it wasnt on there so I went back to my doctors office and made sure he added it on
