I have been looking to see what the recommended daily salt intake is for someone with compensated cirrhosis, is it the same as someone with decompensated cirrhosis, if so then what is it? Does anyone know please. I have looked on the Webb but keep getting different answers.
Daily salt intake.: I have been looking... - British Liver Trust
Daily salt intake.
There is no requirement to reduce salt intake per-se. The usual daily recommended amounts is usually adequate unless you are showing signs of oedema. The advice I had at that stage was a recommended amount of 2mg of Sodium per day, which equates to about 6mg of actual Salt. That could though be reduced further depending on the extent of oedema or ascites. However, I would advise caution about reducing salt too much without seeking advice of your own medical team.
thanks
Hi c1jam, I have cirrhosis 10 yrs now, was decompensated for a good year but have been compensated since then
Well i was told 2mg was recommended salt intake per day, I did not ever count my sodium levels,
My liver function is very good so my dr told me two weeks ago, as I have other health issues regards to my mobility.
I'm still regulating my salt levels, infact I can't eat anythng with much salt as I can taste it and it's not nice at all, my salt levels from my blood test was perfect,
I don't know how long you have been on low salt intake for but I do know once you get used to it you won't eat anythng salty again. Bit like cutting sugar out of tea and coffee. Any concerns contact your Gp. Prevention is better than cure, never wait for signs of oedema or ascites..Good luck
Add no salt to anything there is enough in normal food for your body, and that is for eveyone not just people with liver problems
I have been doing low carb since January but the advice is if you're cutting out carbs like bread you need to increase your salt intake, ideally sea salt as bread does have salt in it.
