Mirizzi's syndrome

Hello, I'm new ......

Have just learned that I have 'Mirizzi's syndrome', (seen on MRI scan) and would appreciate any possible advice on the subject from anyone who knows anything about it.

Hospital I have been dealing with is less than helpful, and although I go to see the surgeon on Monday, I have no confidence that I will get any reasonable help at all.

Each hospital visit where I have been informed I will see Mr, Ms, Dr X, I end up seeing someone different. All bar one have been locums, (actually a couple of them were quite good), and I have only seen a consultant once, who ordered an MRI scan, blood test and CT scan with contrast.

I received a copy letter in November stating that my gall bladder needed to come out and I would be passed to the surgeon. (This is the general surgeon of the hospital who has only been here a few months. From looking at her profile I can see she is young and possibly not been practising very long)

My symptoms are not devastating although I am fairly housebound due to fatigue, nausea and the like. Would like some feedback as to wether this condition warrants a second opinion, or a request for a more experienced or specialist surgeon. Am I being unreasonable in this? Do not want to be worse after this op than I am now!

Thanks for reading!

hi painedjane I went into hospital to have my gallbladder removed and when i came round from the anisthetic i was told that i had not had my gallbladder removed as it had shrunk from the size of a pear to the size of a thimble and that it was stuck onto my liver also my 1/4 of my liver had atrophied and i also had fatty liver.the stone was 3cm. i was sent home and after a few times of being in and out of hospital with pain and infection and being on many anti biotic drips and pills i was sent for an ERCP which is a procedure to try to get the gallstone out with wires and baskets, That did not work and i was diagnosed with MIrrizis syndrome, the stone had calcified inside the bile duct due to infections and i had to have my bile duct reconstructed from bowel tissue the operation is called an hepaticojejunostomy, my operation lasted 5 hours. That was 19 months ago, im 66 and it has truly taken me all that time to really get better and feel anything back to what i was before all this gallstone trouble started, some days i can feel quite sick but im so much better and back on my feet and managing to exercise, love grace xoxo ps meant to say im not sure if it warrants a second opinion as i also had an MRI scan and it was not discovered at that point it was not until i had the ERCP it was diagnosed

Wow Grace 111, ..... you have been through ALOT!

I am 68 now, and put many of my symptoms down to ageing process. (Pain, nausea, jaundice twice, etc) However there is clearly something not right, but I fear that even if they manage to get the GB out without problems, (which seems unlikely since instead of atrophying it has actually extended into the liver, GB wall is thickened and misshapen), they will send me home without making sure all is ok.

Your experience heartens me because - you survived, and went on to get the attention you needed, and eventually got better.

My big gallstone is stuck in the neck of the gall bladder, in Hartman's Pouch, so may be that's why the pain is not astronomical yet, even though it is compressing one of the ducts.

My GP didn't know what Mirizzi's syndrome was, but I know he will do his best for me when the op is over. But that is all to come, still to see the surgeon on Monday afternoon, when I hope she will outline the plan of action.

Thank you so much for your reply Grace, love and hugs (gently) to you, and hope your recovery will soon be complete.

Jane

please dont worry jane im sure they will look after you as there are so many peope now a days getting their gallbladder out. i forgot to say that i had a stent in my bile duct the day they gave me the ERCP when they realized i had mirrizis syndrome as the bile was trapped and could not get through. my stone came out of the hartman pouch so it was rather complicated. im sure that they will take good care of you as they do know what can happen when you have mirizzis syndrome and the stone can move around causing the bile to get trapped and cause infection, im glad that your seeing the surgeon on monday and im pretty sure that you will get the same operation as me. I had a fantastic surgeon in Edinburgh.please let me know how you get on with the surgeon on Monday, thanks for the love and gentle hugs. love grace xoxo
