What is a normal GGT range?

My GGT is 63 so I have googled this and the range seems all over the place. As low as 25 and as high as 80 depending on the source. Does anyone know what I should be aiming for?

normal is anything between 5. to 35 i was looking at your other posts and you can have fatty liver even if your slim as i have that im not over weight. just keep to a good diet and eat lots of veg and some fruit. your doctor is not worried so you should try to relax. mine was over 200 when i had liver problems and also high when i had gall stones, try not to eat greasy fry ups and go easy on cream and butter and high fat food. what made your doctor want a liver function test in the first place as the clue is in that reason,

Each lab tends to have its own reference range for what is normal as there are a number of different ways used to detect the enzyme. Hence the reason for the wide disparity you have found. To be accurate you'd need to find out what the reference range was for your lab. They also can differ between men and women too.

If you know which lab it could go to, usually its the local hospital or even a central hospital that will have the lab where the tests are done, you may be able to find their reference ranges on line as some labs publish their procedures and ranges on line. So if you are after a quick guide then try that. Your GP will have them though so you could also go down that line too. At least then you'll get the actual ranges that are relevant.

To give you a bit of an example the reference ranges for GGT at the QEHB are between 9 and 40 U/L for women and between 9 and 50 U/L for men.

I would though be cautious about chasing a particular value. Just because you are slightly outside what may be considered a normal value for the population as a whole, that value may actually be normal for you. The link below will take you to some useful info about how references ranges are determined on the lab tests on line website. It all comes down to statistics in how they are derived. So, you may just be one of the 5% where your normal is outside the average normal for everyone else.

I'd just accept that the value you have may be slightly high and work with your doctor to figure out what may be causing that and that could be an issue or not.

That's a really useful link and a great bit of info. Thanks for putting that up.

Hi Bobs,

Differences in normal range for different laboratories can make it difficult to compare or comment on individual test results specifically. This is due to the different brand of tests that are used and how these are interpreted.

We would suggest that you speak with your own doctors regarding any test results. You may find our publication 'Liver disease tests explained' useful to read, here is the link;

Hi I think below 40 for a female and maybe 65 for a guy, but it depends what your baseline is. As your gp butbit can be well into the hundreds if there is a problem. It’s very complicated and I’m no expert. Good luck and worrying won’t help it! 😁
