Hi Im a 42 year old male and I have just been told I have none alcoholic liver disease. Im very scared as two years ago my mum died as a result of the same. is there any medication? What foods do people recommend as I keep getting mixed information. I understand that I have to loose weight. Are there any liver detox medicines or herbal that any one recommends? Please help :-(

Don't waste your time or money on herbal remedies or so called liver detoxes as they are not recommended due to being untested and in some cases even hazardous to the liver.

Is it non-alcohol related fatty liver disease that they've said you have? There are lots of conditions of the liver that are not alcohol related. I am surmising it is NAFLD with you saying they've told you to loose weight, however, there are also hereditory conditions of the liver and with there being a family history it could be something else.

For information on NAFLD and things you might do to manage your condition going forward have a look at the British Liver Trust page at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

Yes it's NAFLD I'm really scared. I hope I can turn things around. Thank you for your response. I'll stay away from tonics.

What's your Body Mass Index? That's an important factor when it comes to NAFLD. Chances are there is something hereditary causing this issue. However, find out what that is, shoot from the hip, and reverse it. The good thing is, it's not cirrhosis, that gives you the chance to recover fully. Most of the time, diet restrictions, exercise and lifestyle changes can reverse the issue. Have you had a full blood panel with cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL?

Hi thanks for response, I'm awaiting the results from the second set of bloods that were taken. The Fibro scan (Not sure if that's the right name) was high so I'm pretty worried.

hi Timsterbug

Please don't panic there are things you can do to help yourself. Are you under the care of a liver specialist or are you being referred to one?

Have a look at the information on our website on non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD) here: britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

We also have information on diet and nutrition here (including information about the use of alternative therapies): britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

There are publications on both that you can download or, if you prefer, call our offices and we can send paper copies to you.

Please do call our helpline if you have further questions.

Thank you. I'm awaiting my next appointment. Unfortunately the doctors didn't really give me any advice just handed me a leaflet.

Do you know the numbers for fibroscan and was it the KPA score or CAP score that was high? KPA is fibrosis, CAP is hepatic steatosis (liver fat). Remember, you want to stay in a healthy BMI. As deep fat is the enemy of a liver dealing with NAFLD. The fat infiltrates the hepatocytes and this damage turns into fibrosis
