Hi there

I have read that this amino acid can help detoxify the liver and bring GGT and ALT levels back to normal after stopping drinking, has anyone tried this ?

Regards

Peter

You'll probably find that someone from the British Liver Trust will jump on here soon and advise that they don't advocate the non-tried and tested supplements for treatment of liver issues as they can infact harm the liver. Methionine seems to be used by medics as one of the medicines they use following paracetemol poisoning to try and rescue the liver.

This is what WebMD has to say about the substance:- Methionine is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth or injected intravenously (by IV) to treat acetaminophen poisoning, but only under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

DON'T TREAT YOURSELF WITH METHIONINE. It is POSSIBLY UNSAFE to self-medicate with methionine if you use larger amounts than those typically found in food. Too much methionine can cause brain damage and death. Methionine can increase blood levels of homocysteine, a chemical that might cause heart disease. Methionine might also promote the growth of some tumors.

Liver disease, including cirrhosis: Methionine might make liver disease worse.

Doesn't sound like something you should meddle with as it might make your condition a whole lot worse. Safest way to detox your liver is to stay off booze and eat healthily. Following the guidance on looking after your liver from the BLT or your own medical team.

Hi Katie

Many thanks for your sound advice and taking the trouble to write it. I will definitely not be meddling with Methionine. I did get the message BLT regarding herbal remedies but I am sure some dandelion tea and milk thistle should be OK, what do you thing ?

Peter

We were expressly told not to take any supplements (hubby has cirrhosis already) so we stick by that.

Yesterday I started a treatment for hepatit C genotype 3 and the first thing the doctor told me to stop all the supplements.

Can someone in hepC let me know how they are?

Thank you

Hi,

The British Liver Trust does not recommend the use of homeopathic or herbal remedies for those with any liver problems as these have to be processed by the liver and can actually damage the liver and lead to severe illness.

More research needs to be done on the use and safety of such remedies and therapies.

If you have concerns about any prescribed medication or are considering using complementary or alternative remedies &/or therapies always discuss this with your doctor.
