Have now got my dates for my assessment. š¬
Just a quick question. Does the assessment just check that you are physically and mentally suitable to receive a transplant
Or
Does it test to also see if you actually need a transplant
???

Yes both. Different centres do it differently but yes the assessment checks whether transplant is currently needed so assesses all aspects of your liver health with more scans, loads of blood tests etc. etc. It then also checks that you are fit enough for transplant and have no additional illnesses that might make transplant too risky so heart and lungs are throroughly examined and they check you have nothing else going on anywhere else in your body.
You're going to get the best physical MOT going. I wrote a whole weeks post back when my hubby was assessed, ok it was at Edinburgh but generally all the tests done and discussions had will be similar to whatever unit you attend. You'll find it if you click on my name and look up my actual posts and it's there.
All the best, Katie - Hope it all works out for you in whatever way you desire.
Oh dear... An MOT on this old wreck? I'm held together with bits of sticky back plastic and blu-tac
what ever happens i hope that every thing goes the best way it can for you. getting a new liver will surely make you feel so much better in the long run, let us know how everything goes please as we are wishing you well love grace xoxo ā¤ļø
Yes, physically and mentally fit. Your have a series of tests, breathing, EEG, ECG, CPET, bloods and arterial bloods, X-ray, CT scan, chat to dietician, social worker, surgeon, transplant team - anesiatist, hepatologist etc....They will once all test have been completed discuss as to your suitablility for transplant. I had my assessment at Kings on a Monday and Tuesday, they held there meeting on the Thursday and Friday at about 1300 I had the call to say I was listed. I had to then go for an educational day which gives your lots of information about the procedure and what to do between now and getting the call, and that is pretty much it.
The Dr's, nurses, transplant team are lovely and made me feel very comfortable, even if some of the tests weren't so great.
Write down any questions...I had lots and make sure your honest with how your feeling they are there to make sure this is right for you, they don't want you to get into something that makes you unhappy.
Lots of Luck!
That helps a lot. I'll be at Kings too so very helpful thank you. EEG sounds like fun, mind you for my head you'll probably be better of using a sonar, echo echo echo...
You've just described the same experience I had at Kings. Although I was in all week because I wasn't too well at the time and it was quite a drawn out process. A lot of waiting.
And on the Friday they came back with some issues about blood disease they wanted to discount. I had to wait another week or so and have another bone marrow procedure at my local hospital, and when the results came though clear I was priority listed.
So my point is sometimes it's not always possible to list you or not by the end of the week.
There are a lot of tests, but very useful my other half was diagnosed with a heart and lung condition during the assessment. Whilst this has prevented him going on to the list at the moment it does mean that he is receiving treatment for a condition that may have gone undiagnosed otherwise.
