Venous eczema is a common form of eczema / dermatitis that affects one or both lower legs in association with venous insufficiency. It is also called gravitational dermatitis.
Venous eczema appears to be due to fluid collecting in the tissues and activation of the innate immune response.
Normally during walking the leg muscles pump blood upwards and valves in the veins prevent pooling. A clot in the deep leg veins (deep venous thrombosis or DVT) or varicose veins may damage the valves. As a result back pressure develops and fluid collects in the tissues. An inflammatory reaction occurs. ................
Found this information for you. I have not come across this with my Cirrhosis, but maybe others on here have. It seems to be treated with antibiotics and creams. I do hope it starts to dry and clear for you soon xx xx
Yes i have a patient with venous eczema and in his case it has nothing to do with his liver as he does not have liver disease, in fact he is a healthy person aged 60+ but i guess he just has poor circulation in that part of his leg. He hasnt had a DVT or anything else, just this patch of venous eczema diagnosed by a GP. All we do is treat it as eczema and know that the discolouration and bulging veins will remain but are not harmful.
Thanks Bolly good to know there is no link..i don't have any varicose veins but do have beir spots on my arms and legs so the consultant said it's due to poor blood flow since the beir spots are very large. .the rash is gone after antibiotics and steroid cream..hope it doesn't come back!
