HI tammy

Dont take anything without asking your specialist, you are correct some of these supplements that you find online are harmful to someone with Liver issues.

Milk thistle is widely accepted to benefit the Liver, but nothing will reverse Cirrhosis in any case.

thankyou ralph, will ask, i was reading that anything with copper or iron in it, is not good for the liver, is that true?, my last bloods the consultant said i had to much iron, so it kind of makes sense.

Hi when you say you have too much iron in your blood is it this that's caused the liver problems? If so you prob need some dietary advice too. Milk Thistle is good for helping liver to cope with toxins.

no its not the iron count that has caused my liver problems but maybe combined it has, i dont know, the consultant just keeps saying she is keeping an eye on it, hopefully she will no more when i see her this month, thanks for advice about milk thistle.

Dear Tammy

If you have liver damage you need to be very careful about taking any supplements without first seeking advice from your specialist. If you need particular supplements then these are often prescribed or addressed by changes in your diet.

We have lots of information on our website on a range of liver conditions. Please see: britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

Do feel free to call or email us on 01425 481320 or info@britishlivertrust.org.uk if you need any further information or have any questions.

Best wishes

Carol

If you have too much iron in your blood have you been tested for Hemochromostatis ? This is a specific test , not the normal liver panel which will tell you this. It is genetic.

As Bermuda says, please ask to be checked for haemachromatosis if you have elevated iron levels. And don't think about supplements, give the docs a chance to give you a correct diagnosis.

Tammy please ensure she does and you are not fobbed of . There are Hemochromstatis groups on Facebook , and rganisaions , which will give you all the info you need.

hi bermuda, just looked up hemochromastis, i do suffer with joint pain and obviously have fibrosis of the liver, so its interesting, that was my second blood test that was high in iron, when my problems with my liver first started because i enjoyed a drink that was automatically seen as the cause but i this is something to question on my next visit to the consultant. Although i dont know where the genetics come from as none of my family have this, but saying that my mum never knew her dad, so lots to think about, thankyou for making me aware.

Interesting topic.

Has anyone views on what liver supplements may actually damage the liver? (in the case of liver damage or not), seems a complex area if liver supplements can have the opposite effect than intended.

I dont take anything with Iron, and try to reduce my Ferritin levels with blood donation and IP6.

I dont think I have liver damage ( I hope, based on ok bloods and a MRI a couple of years ago, though there was a liver cyst that they did not seem to worried about), but one can never know.

I still take alcohol on occasion, though try to stick to guidlines if I do.

I take 3 supplements ( from my own research) PPC, NAC, and SAMe. Has anyone a view or experience on these? I do seem to feel better, I dont seem to have that pain i had on my right side, it felt on the rib rather than below.

GARGAGE! It is pure garbage. First, it is in dosages that a newborn baby will not benefit. Research each ingrediant at legit SCIENCE sites etc. Nothing will help your liver recover or detox etc. Pisses me off these supplement companies are taking advantage of ignorant and desperate people that don't know better.

i know my liver will never recover, that would be a miracle but theres nothing wrong with trying to help it along a little.

I would not class myself as either ignorant or desperate.

I never said the dosage level I applied and its a strong statement to say nothing will assist your liver.

I have found evidence of some credible medical studies published on the supplements I note above.

I would be happy to reference them for your qualified opinion.

From my research sam E has benefits on the liver. I take one daily. Helps with anxiety too.

Pls ask your doc before taking anything though.

There are a lot of studies and tests being done in Liver Specialist hospitals ie. Kings in Birmingham UK that show evidence of reversal of fibrosis these are very encouraging results. I myself have had some fibrosis reversal ( I have Haemochromatosis) so there are definately things you can do to help yourself! Be positive and proactive and depending on how badly damaged your liver is it can recover especially if it's acute damage!

Keep positive. 😃
