Does anyone think that N A C has a place in liver health? Or is it no good.

What about milk thistle?

The British Liver Trust who host this page does not recommend the use of any homoeopathic or herbal remedies for those with any liver problems as these may damage the liver and lead to severe illness. British Liver Trust has a page all about complementary and alternative therapies at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

Some forum members have been specifically warned by their hepatologists to not take milk thistle - there is only anecdotal (not scientific) evidence that it does any good and infact is known to elevate liver numbers and potentially do more harm. Much milk thistle is also sold in a tincture with alcohol as the dissolving agent. NAC (N-acetyl cysteine ) seems to be used clinically in treatment of paracetemol/tylenol over dose but it could be harmful in liver disease - can cause blood clotting difficulties etc.

I would stay clear unless you've discussed these with your medical team.

All the best,

Katie

Hi dreamkiller. Milk thistle and other suppliments are of no help to the liver. Its more about avoiding sugary, fatty foods and alcohol and having a healthy lifestyle than giving the liver something else to have to deal with.

Best wishes Laura

They normally do know what they're talking about ..a little bit of fatty liver I'd be happy about if it was me. You can do something about it

I can't find it now but I recently read an article that explained that excess insulin resulted in fatty liver, so the answer is to avoid sugars and carbohydrates. Which also help if you are prediabetic with visceral fat around internal organs (possibly the effect of insulin again when aging reduces other hormone production)
