Hi I'm having a Fibroscan, next week I know what the process involves. I just however wondered. If say you have a kpa of seven what does it mean. As if it's over, that then you need to have a liver biopsy.

Whether you go on to have a biopsy will depend on a lot of different factors, including do the doctors know the cause of your liver damage as biopsies are usually done to either diagnose a condition or work out why a treatment plan isnt working. If you have not yet been diagnosed and the docs are not sure what is wrong you might have a biopsy. If you have been diagnosed then you probably wont need a biopsy if the treatment is a straightforward decision for your doctors.

A Fibroscan will measure the fat on your liver and a biopsy will find out the cause of the damage! I had my Fibroscan and a week after i had the biopsy to find out what is the cause of the damage in the liver.

If your doctors has the answer and already knows what is causing the problem on your liver and then you do not need a biopsy.

Just to add that not all Fibroscan machines measure the fat on your liver. Only the very expensive newer versions do. The original Fibroscan machine measures the 'stiffness' of your liver, the stiffer it is the higher the kPa reading and more liver damage you have. If you result is in kPa then the machine has measure the stiffness only.
