How stenuous is the medical assessment that you undergo to see if you can be put on the liver transplant list?

I don't know what hospital or health authority you are under but below is a link to the Scottish Liver Transplant Units patient handbook which you can download and it takes you right through the assessment which I suppose is probably very similar through all the UK's transplant units.

All the best to you and your husband.

Thanks Katie,we are going to Freeman hosp. in Newcastle,Micky had to have an emergency hernia operation just over 4 weeks ago there and was already waiting for the assessment which had to be put back due to his op,he is alot stronger again now and am hoping he can manage the exercise bike bit,am also hoping that as he came through the op. so well something in his body must be strong and hope it bodes well, the doctors said it was a 70% mortality rate due to his cirrhosis, but luckily he survived and made a good recovery.

My partner had his transplant in April. For assessment they did bike test, blood test and scans bp etc. They then had him

Back with me and family to go through process of transplant , more bloods and bp . They were

Very supportive answering and explaining everything. They also take into account the mental health aspect. As in someone may decide that a transplant is not what they want. Your hubby sounds a strong guy and a positive mental attitude goes a long way as did the stubborn streak my man has :-) xx

We were at the Queen Elizabeth in Birmingham . The staff were brilliant . Don't be afraid to ask questions. It's an emotional and worrying time and they understands that . Keep us updated

With the BP were the doctors looking at it being too high or too low etc

Yeah cos they have to go under general anthesetic and bp has to be good or regulated I think. Same as most pre ops etc.

The only really strenuous part of the test I found was the bike. Other than that you are generally poked and prodded and scanned to see if your body can cope with a major op. Of course, everything is stressful psychologically, especially the wait for the transplant team's decision. So remain positive and all will go smoothly.

All the best

Think it depends on why you are having the assessment . My other half was in an Rta 3 years ago and damaged his but then got strictures in bile ducts

I didn't have the bike test either. I had my transplant at St James Hospital in Leeds and spent 4 days there for my assessment. For me it involved a lot of talking to different specialist, everytime I opened my eyes someone was at the end of my bed wanting to talk to me. I also had a lot of scans, blood tests, blood pressure etc and I had to be able walk up & down some stairs. I actually enjoyed my 4 day stay as I was so well looked after. I wish your husband and yourself all the very best. Remember it will also be a very stressful time for you so you need to look after yourself also. x
