In C25K there was advice to land on your heel - glad I never managed to work out how to do that!

That was something we had many queries about on Couch to 5k and tried to get that advice removed.

Heel striking was certainly not something we promoted on the forum .

Very interesting, I can't barefoot run on roads or even my minimalist shoe run due to the left needing to be built up or my spine would be crooked, but I am barefoot at home and do most my exercises barefoot, for an old girl I'm proud of my feet. Thanks for sharing so we could read and learn

Interesting! I naturally run on my forefoot and surprisingly don't pronate. I have 'barefoot' boots and walking shoes, but am nervous of changing my running shoes at the moment!.That said, like Sola, I do all my exercises in bare feet. I read an article which said that during lockdown, people's feet spread a bit as they weren't squeezing their feet into work shoes!

Absolutely! It's the only way you can run in the sort of shoes I wear. Heel striking is extremely painful when there's no cushioning.

Interestingly, I also land forefoot when walking nowadays. It's subtle, and you wouldn't notice it if you weren't watching closely. All my shoes wear out first at the front.

But as always, caution when changing long established habits. You can't just switch overnight. It's got to be a gradual transition over several months.

About 10 years before I started C25k, my OH tried to encourage me to run, so we did a run/walk between lampposts. On noticing I ran on my forefoot, he tried to encourage me to land on my heel, as he has always done, Big mistake! Achilles was damaged and the pain was noticeable when getting out of bed each morning. The running did not continue, and my Achilles wasn’t sorted until I had a massage on holiday in Turkey!

On starting C25k, I ran on forefoot naturally and that’s where I’m staying. I’ll now have to check whether it’s little toe first.
