3K for Mr Garmin ๐Ÿ˜Š

I havenโ€™t done a short run for a while and it wasnโ€™t even my intention when I started out this morning; I had every intention of running for 4K.

I start off at a fairly slow pace that will enable me to speed up gradually as I run. Usually I try to run 4K in just under 30 minutes. As I was running the first couple of kilometres, I was thinking about fitness age and I thought I would do a 3K with a fast (for me!) third km and see if my fitness age on Garmin improved significantly. I donโ€™t really take much notice of this, but I was just curious.

So - second km done and as I start the 3rd kilometre, I pay special attention to form, shoulders back and relaxed, deep breath, and Iโ€™m off, arms pumping, looking ahead (and not at my watch). I manage to keep going until my watch buzzes and signals the end of the km. Iโ€™m out of breath but invigorated by the unexpected workout. I do my warm down walk and Iโ€™m home. Didnโ€™t seem like Iโ€™d been out for long enough!

Looking at the stats, Iโ€™m pleased. I did my 3rd fastest km time. Iโ€™m such a snail that a pace of 6 something always makes me happy ๐Ÿ˜Š

Km Splits: 7:58, 7:30, 6:31

And yes, my fitness age improved by 5 years from that one run. ๐Ÿ˜‚ It had been slipping down lately, presumably because of the similar longer runs Iโ€™d been doing to get my January 100K. Now itโ€™s 21!

Hilarious! You'll be back in nappies before you know it at this rate๐Ÿ˜‚A good run though Julia and that's a nice pace for the final km.

I'm tempted to try a 3k myself next week and see what happens

๐Ÿ˜‚ Thanks, Diane. We know itโ€™s good to mix up our runs, but I havenโ€™t been doing much mixing lately. 3K is a nice distance, I like it!

So you are 21 again, congratulations, must take you back to the first time that you were 21, you got 3 negative splits for that run, well done ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿพ.

Canโ€™t remember that far back, Al ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh to be 21 again, that sounds like a great run and brilliant splits

Thank you ๐Ÿ™. Haha, not sure Iโ€™d want to be 21 again ๐Ÿ˜Š

Negative splits are much easier on a 3K run ๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™ll have to try that, i am usually aiming for further maybe a few shorter runs would be good

Yes! Shorter runs are good ๐Ÿ‘

โ™ซ She's got the key of the door. Never been 21 before... โ™ซ

I do 6'30"/km all the time. Why doesn't Garmin like that? [pout]

But seriously, that's a good pace. You wouldn't do a 10km run that fast (nor would I).

I can't remember. Did you do the 1km speed challenge back in December?

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to nowster

Exactly! You do it all the time - I canโ€™t; well not yet, anyway! Funny, though. Once I did a 2 km run and my pace on the second km was 6:10, but it didnโ€™t register as a PB on either Garmin or Strava. Weird. Perhaps a glitch.

No, I didnโ€™t do the speed challenge. Too much pressure! Might do one on my own. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Nice one, I was thinking of a Fartlek run next ๐Ÿ˜

Just be careful, they might start doing vaccinations according to fitness age ๐Ÿคฃ

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to Instructor57

Oh no!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Iโ€™m hoping for โ€˜theโ€™ letter soon. Iโ€™m next after the over 70s ๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™ve tried Fartleks, but if Iโ€™m speeding up I like to be able to measure it. So I prefer some kind of interval work. Iโ€™ve done 60 seconds followed by 90 seconds slow jogging, but I think I need to increase that running distance now.

Yes, I have a similar one on my watch , but I did run and walk last time , ๐Ÿ˜

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to Instructor57

I did, too, to start with; but if you persevere then soon you are able to slow jog instead of walking as your stamina increases. Or maybe I slowed down a bit in the running sections!

Well done Jools, your first km would be fast for me, dont think i've had one, with a 6, at the start! ๐Ÿคฃ I should do some shorter runs, but always want to stay out longer. Was planning on a run sat morning, but things not too good with my mum, they are letting me see her tomorrow, as they think she's close to end of life now. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to Peter44

Thanks, Peter. I can only do a 6 something km when Iโ€™m fully warmed up, but not too tired, so usually at the end of a shorter run.

Iโ€™m so sorry about your Mum. Iโ€™ve been through similar. When the Dutch go through tough times, they say โ€˜Strengthโ€™ to each other. This is exactly what I needed during my Mumโ€™s last days so Iโ€™m sending you strength for you and your family to cope with what lies ahead.

My best wishes too Peter. My mother died last year. Its really hard for so many of us going through this. Thank goodness for running. I still remember my run the day after she died - it really helped.

You spring chicken you! Awesome! In the light of this I shall have to think twice about a Garmin... my 'fitness age' could be hilariously depressing! My day not quite so lively: dentist, where last week's work has given me a golf ball-sized cartoon-style lump in my jaw along with yet another tooth extraction... and I was only in for a deep clean! All that and identify theft... my particulars used for a fraudulent insurance claim for a car I don't own...Blessed night's sleep can't come soon enough...

Well done you! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿค—

Goodness me, Joe! Hopefully this coming week will be better for you with the end of the dental work and the identity theft exposed. I hope you managed a good nightโ€™s sleep. I woke this morning to find the downstairs lights were out - something blew the trip and I have a handful of spotlights not working, When it gets light Iโ€™ll have to replace one of them to see if I have a bigger problem with the electrics. These things are sent to try us. Being an electrician is not one of my talents!

The fitness age is more amusing than anything else and I love my watch, it gives me all the stats I want. Hope you have a better day today ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿคž

JoePhoto profile image
JoePhotoGraduate10 in reply to Jools2020

I know, what a hoot! Slept better - and I hope the daylight helps identify the errant issue. Electrics, know what you mean and, right now if it's not just a bulb blowing and tripping the breaker (or the RCD?), it can take ages getting a qualified electrician they're all so busy with small business grant work!Yes, the watch would be fun - how did you get to choose yours?

Today: strength and flex and a walk - the pounding of a run - I am not as light on my feet as I should be - would still reverberate most uncomfortably!๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜‚

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to JoePhoto

Message left for local electrician. Changing the bulb sadly didnโ€™t work. There are 4 spots that work from the one switch, so safer to leave it to the experts.

My daughter-in-law recommended the watch, a Garmin Vivoactive 3. Love it. I also hear good things about the Forerunner series.

Hehe 21 again! I sort of remember what it was like ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ great splits! My 1k PB is that exact time, 6:31. Only happened once, at the beginning of one of my long runs back in September, I think. Still don't know how it happened ๐Ÿ˜‚ Nowadays, if my time starts with a 7 I'm over the moon!

Jools2020 profile image

I think I might go out for a 2K run soon. Good warm up walk, slow jog the first K, then go all out for another PB! That should do it ๐Ÿ˜„

Well done! Itโ€™s funny how mixing things up seem to work. My fastest 5km is still my first consolidation run after graduating C25k. Brisk walk 5 minutes, 30 minute jog, walk to end of park run course. My walk/runs are often faster than a straight run ๐Ÿ˜‚

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to LottieMW

Funny how that happens with walk /runs. Maybe if you know youโ€™re going to be walking, you just run faster in the run parts! ๐Ÿ˜Š
