I am so sorry that I am late with this week's post... busy days, running, gardening and venturing a little further for some walking and picnic adventures. The glorious Peak District and some hidden favourites.
Not getting to back to Wales again yet, but the photo shows a great view from the bottom of the castle mound. I chose this photograph, which I have used many times previously, as for me certainly, it seems to summarise the way I feel, sometimes, during these uncertain and difficult times.
The way ahead seems often, impossible and the obstacles insurmountable...and then I read the posts on here, I go for a run, I think of my family and all that I have to be thankful for and I do repeat, in my head my, all too familiar infamous...slow and steady. Things will evolve, changes will occur, but some things, precious things, will remain constant and will be worth waiting for.
Running wise, I am still getting out three or more times a week... trying to up my distances, doing the 30 day Yoga challenge, whilst making sure I have a time to relax, garden! read or write and paint.
I read your posts and am in awe of your strength and determination in the face of all manner of difficulties...reaching your targets and goals and when you stumble, picking yourselves up and carrying on regardless. It really is worth taking time to read folk's replies on the Quest, what we are achieving is truly fantastic!
So we need to know.
How is it all going? Are you meeting those targets, have you already met them? Are you staying strong and well ?
Let us know what you are up to please
We truly will, get there!

Hi I think my June target was to consolidate c25k by continuing to run 3x a week and gradually increase time on one run to reach 5k by end of June. Managed 4K last weekend so going to add 0.5 for the next 2 weekend and job done (I hope)
My progress seems very erratic somehow - the yoga is a bit on and off (although gardening yesterday is a great reminder this morning!), as is the running. Not bagged that 5k yet. Not run this week yet after all the excitement of Beeley Triangle (hats off to you regular road runners) and a nice but slightly busier than I'd like circuit of Stanton Moor (which saw me running with double buff covered face at times) I've been walking with the family - some very quiet places in the White Peak close to home, new running routes perhaps, if I can put up with the shimmy through the squeezer stiles.
We had hot yesterday, thunder storms last night and the night before, and torrential rain since 5 a.m. non stop!
You are making some of your targets..( love Stanton Moor).. every time we have been there pre-lockdown, it was just us! I was eyeing up some potential routes around Brassington and Rainster Rocks... deserted on Tuesday!
I have you to thank for the Yoga spur on!
It all sounds very positive...and yes, the gardening ... a work out in itself
Rainster Rocks is on my list! Had a walk at Carsington the other night, hot... and the rangers evidently haven't been feeding the birds during lockdown so they were not to be seen. Was reminded all over again what a horrible running surface it is!
I am glad that you are enjoying your yoga, good post and lovely photo.
This morning I ran my 9th 10K as part of running 10/10K's before the end of June, today marks two years since I graduated from C25K so I thought a nice anniversary run would mark the occasion.
Happy runniversary! 10Ks seem a bit of a distant memory for me, but you can go on so many interesting journeys at that distance. Enjoy your ultimate one for June!
Two runs down on the 10 is the magic number plan week 3. 5k and 7k. Just the 3.5k to go tomorrow. Iβm doing the shorter one as a recovery run as Iβm trying not to push pace. No injuryβs yet and loving every moment πββοΈThanks for checking in.
My aim was to start a 10k plan so be running 8km by the end of the month, I actually started it the last week of May so on track to run 8km this weekend π. Finding the plan good so far, I said on one of my others posts Iβm enjoying the longer runs, more comfortable than the shorter ones. I was also hoping to run a sub 30 min 5km, Iβve got another 40 seconds to knock off my PB so that may have to wait a bit longer.
Go you..well done. .. those ovely long runs are just super...and the more of those you do..you will find your pace evolves wonderfully ...you will be surprised!
Hoping to get round 40k/FM with some sort of walk/trot strategy.Definetly going to save myself by walking the hills.Donβt know how much I will trot perhaps half of it maximum.Just want to feel the distance and really got no time limit, just finish.
I'm pleased to hear you have been out for walks and picnic adventures, a lovely change from all that gardening and time spent at home... and some good regular running as well as yoga!
As you know I had a bit of a wobble last week with further injury... I was out doing a drop off of coffee capsules, and was silly crossing a road. I had stopped on the pavement for a car turning off the main road, but he waved me on, so I rushed off the kerb to cross quickly and my already weak left ankle took a strain, leaving me with a more painful limp! I should have known better and waited.
A few days of icing and rest and my ankle is feeling better though, so back on my comeback plight with continued physio, and the yoga compliments this by giving me a good stretch as well as strength and balance.
Next week I will begin adding the impact again suggested by my physiotherapist if all is well.
Still questing hard here, albeit just healing and strengthening!
Aww what a pity.Every good wish Jan, always.πͺπ.Love the coffee capsules.Have used Nespresso with the DeLonghi M/c for many years now.70th B/day Present.
You are really going through things right now and yet, here you are still showing the rest of us how it is done!
You are doing well to keep up with all your exercises and they will be helping...fingers crossed that you will be on track next week. We will wait for your post
The new routines are fine - it more the continual moving of the goal posts we're struggling with and all the big public announcements coming from the government with no guidance for schools until weeks later to back it up.
Parents don't get it and to be fair I don't blame them...
Still had a lovely run this morning - small victories eh?
I have been keeping to my plan and I have been running and walking a 5km on alternate days I completed my 9th 5km of June this morning and ended up looking like a drowned rat but it was worth it....
Hi Oldfloss, lovely to see your post, hope you enjoyed your picnicking adventures. All on track here, did my 3rd interval session of June this evening, long runs I'm up to 7.5k completed last Sunday so may get the 8k a week early this Sunday. Monthly total is currently 37k so as long as I complete the remaining planned runs I should get just over 60k in total for the month. As a little added quest, I decided to eliminate sugar from my diet as of last Monday for the rest of June (been far too much lockdown baking happening π ) and so far it's going well π
Ditching the sugar is a great idea... the white death.... you won't miss it one bit and a great recipe I do, ( I don't really like cake very much, but this is fabulous)..Nigella's Clementine cake... no flour, no sugar...
You are well on target with all your other goals, and 8K on Sunday sounds perfect!
Well done you !
Yes, we are having fun on our adventures; it is so quiet in the week and we are taking our cycles out next week too !
Thanks for the recipe suggestion, I'll look that up. It's amazing what you can find when you start looking. I have a kids recipe book by a woman called Donna Hey, and in it there's some chocolate truffles made without any sugar!! I don't know if it will be a forever thing but I feel great already. One thing I've noticed is I've been less hungy so not only am I not eating a piece of cake or a chocolate but I'm also eating less normal food because I'm just not as hungry.
Have lots of fun exploring on your bikes next week
Well husband is a type 2 Diabetic and we ditched added sugar years ago... I make scones and the fruit in them gives the sweetness.. I add pureed apple to other things and make loads of savoury scones and muffins too..I make Nice Cream...not ice cream using pureed apple too, it is yummy! )
Once you start looking there is some super stuff out there.. I shall look that book up too!
Do, we eat loads out of it, there's some great breakfast cookies with oats, ground almonds, coconut and they are yummy, perfect for a small (or not so small) person snack π
It sounds like youβve had a lovely time getting out Oldfloss. Iβm so pleased for you.
My rehab runs continue and my latest outing was 4k run 500m walk, 1 k run. This was made extra special because it was also a (not) parkrun with our parkrun friends, ending up with a distance coffee and chat on the beach.
Not long now until that non stop 5k, which is my quest. So far, so good.
Hi back injury getting better now managed W3R3 to give it a go all went well bit achy next day. Then after rest day did W7R3 also went well I was very tired at the end but think I could have pushed for another 5 mins but decided to leave it at that. I did them on treadmill in case I had to stop and struggle home back out next week.
I have done lots of gardening though in between the rain
Huge well done you and glad that back is improving... gardening is acting as a great work out for so many of us right now ! Stay on target and stay safe !
Hello Oldfloss, I always enjoy reading your posts they're full of encouragement and wise words. That's the lovely thing about this forum, there are so many out there willing to give encouragement and advice.
When I started C25K in Feb, having never run before, my objective was to get fit and loose weight. What I hadn't anticipated was the sheer joy of being able to run and mental health benefits that would bring.
Like you I'm lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside and the majority of my running is on trails and small country roads. Yesterday I set out to do the final run of JuJu's Magic 10k Plan, I did it and more.... I'm going to enjoy my sense of achievement, consolidate and have some fun with my running whilst I formulate the steps in my running adventure. Half Marathon?
Well done you on completing Ju's great plan... that first 10K is so special!
We are lucky having the countryside for our runs aren't we, although I abandoned the fields this morning as we had 24 hours of heavy continuous rain yesterday and I did not feel the urge for a muddy run!
Working on moving forward from 10K is a great plan.. I did similarly and then took the daft decision to try for a HM which I did last year... this year's was cancelled It was great fun planning and training for that. ..I think you will enjoy it.
Please do keep us posted
My challenge was to run 5k faster, it used to take me almost an hour. I managed 45 mins in hail! Since then it's been a struggle in the heat or humidity. However I'm pleased. I'm hoping to start increased distances now slow and steady.
After joining the quest last week I've managed two runs this week, one 45 minutes and one 35 minutes. Slowly and gradually building up that time and distance just depending on how I feel during each run. 19.86 miles in total of my 26.2 marathon distance completed (not all at once!) so not long to go until I complete my two point six challenge on behalf on London Marathon charities (a little late but better late than never!). Trying to do yoga on my rest days as I've miss going to classes during lockdown. Harder to motivate myself when there's no proper scheduled time for it but trying my best!
Just trying to keep back in the habit of running regularly and enjoying it when I'm out there.
Hi there.. sorry for the late reply... a busy weekend and I got to see my family for the first time in 14 weeks!
You sound to be doing really well with your targets... I am into the yoga too and the 30 day challenge with Adrienne keeps you on track!
The biggest challenge can, as you say, getting into that running habit again, but enjoying it too. I now my first runs out of the garden were not the happiest...but once I was three times a week again... less of a habit and more of a joyful lollop!!
I'm making good progress with my June Quest having squeezed in three 'dedicated' 5k runs (ranging 28-33mins), plus two more longer 'walk-run-walk' sessions (9.99k! and 6.9k) to nudge me closer to the magic 10k for the run element. The first of these long sessions earned me the 60min badge π. I've now clocked up a very pleasing 61k for the month.
Until the recent break in the weather, the heat and humidity was a real battle, even early in the morning π₯΅. Learning to slow the pace right down for the longer runs also remains something of a challenge - too tempting to go off at my 5km pace and find myself run out of steam!
Thank you for another lovely post. Glad to hear that you are getting out running - you sound very busy with that gardening and yoga!!
My quest was to run for an hour by the end of June. I ran for 55 minutes today - very very slowly. But nevertheless, i ran for longer and further than ever before! So another one in the bag for Team Snail!!!
Hi - well I only managed 3 runs this week after late evenings at work (and some fantastic storms) and giving in to rubbish TV on Friday evening. Still I did manage my weekly distance goal (keeping me in touch with my plan to run 1000k this year) and also tried a different sort of intervals - 3x 10 minutes at a sustained higher pace with a minute of slow jogging in between. Think this will help with speed and endurance - at least that's the plan.
Not quite so on track with the healthy eating and less wine goal π
This is good... and you are keeping on top of your targets...the intervals will help I think you will find..I did similarly after an injury... and it made a massive difference to my pace afterwards Keep us posted on that please
The healthy eating and the wine. well maybe some treats at this time are in order... I have been trying to get a bit more weight on... and that is my excuse
I haven't posted because I didn't want to jinx myself but today I finally did my first 10K. Not the fastest (69 mins) but was sort of saving myself and making sure I got round after a mishap or two previously. So a June target made (even if I didn't post it here!)
So, my quest now (for what's left of June ) is to speed up a little. The weekend will have a long run (hopefully more 10Ks) but midweek I will have one or two runs at a faster pace over a shorter distance (about 3k). The eventual aim (and I'm in no great hurry) is to get the 5k time down to 30mins (current best is 31:45).
Welcome and never too late... we join in when we feel we want to
Huge well done on that 10K and what a great time The first one is really, really special.
Targets for improving pace are always useful; and lots of ways to do that too.
Mixing the runs up is great.. a short and sweet, a longer 30 minutes... or 6K ish and those lovely long slow runs that build every single thing up... strength, stamina distance and yes... speed
Hi Floss. I can't believe that it is only a week since I visited the physio and followed it up with a 9k, full of optimism and joie de vivre. In short I over did it and my knee has let me know. Never mind; as we don't do failure on this site I have simply redefined my goals! Now building up in stages from 3k and not moving to greater speed and distance until I can find a base distance I can manage without too much pain and stiffness.....and then move on from there. Today's 3k felt quite good; everything stiffened up at the back of both knees after I finished, but that may have had something to do with a cafe stop for a neo-normal flat white and triple brownie (as in take-away). Lots of people have offered help and encouragement,I have exercises galore and new running shoes to sort out; this site, and our very own Floss are amazing. Happy cycling πππππππ
That sounds like the advice my physio gave me, to just do what I can tolerate, niggle free and stop straight away. Then build from there. Gently does the rehab.
I went backwards by trying to finish my run!
Good luck and lets keep up those exercises, we will get there.π»xx
Thanks Bluebirdrunner. Frustrating isnβt it? βΉοΈI am now positive that I have two problems. The runnerβs knee, which is manageable, and a small meniscus tear. The latter calms down, but expands and swells with running. I have pinpointed the spot (helpfully just under the KT logo) so will ask the physio to look at it. I have iced it tonight, post run and exercises, and it feels ok. But as you say, no time for heroics. We will get there ππ
Interestingly , when I had the issues with my knee, which flagged up possible fractures in my leg, which ed to an MRI scan... my consultant told me that over 70%of adults over the age of 30 would have meniscus tears!!
Well done on the Yoga! Hope you are enjoying it. I dip in and out of yoga but don't really think it's for me.
I have kept to my quest so far, and I ran my third 10K on Friday. My "race" 10K that I have been working towards has finally been cancelled for 2020, which although I was expecting is really disappointing. I'm in two minds about carrying on running 10K every couple of weeks as I really don't like the distance, but equally my body is getting used to that level of running now. The 10K race is now taking place in May 2021 so I have plenty of time to build back up to 10K before then. I will still do a long run once a week, but I find 8K so much more comfortable than 10K - I am dragging myself round the last 2K. I'd be grateful for anyone's view on this; does it get better or will it always be the case?
One byproduct of running 10K is it takes me much longer to run 5K! I am taking part in #NotParkRun and the two times I have submitted are some of the slowest 5Ks I have ever run!
Regardless of this I am still loving my running and next week will see my runnerversary, so I am thinking of running C25K W1R1 again, just to see how it feels! I remember it even now as the worst run I have ever done and I spent the evening wondering if I had bitten off more than I could chew, but also spurred on that I realised I need to get a lot fitter than I was .
Checking in for first time re my blooming june challenge. Good steady progress. Today first 50 min run ever ever ππ Getting a bit more used to intervals for my short run - still all over the place but I'm not stopping along the way. I've also been trying out some of Nike Run Club guided runs the short interval one is really good I think. Good luck everyone for rest of our June quest. I'm running all the way to the hairdressers on the 4thπ so pleased I've got my practice in !!
My left ankle has fully recovered from my first attempt at running again. I'm still working on strengthening my quads and knees. Today I added some plyometric (impact) exercise again, and hopefully will feel ready for w1 R1 again soonish.
All this physio I have been doing, my left leg is showing itself to be my weaker side. π€Wonder now if my right achillies injury was because it was working harder, and as I began my rehab runs on a weakened right ankle, the left ankle struggled to do the work....
Both legs are getting full attention now so fingers crossed for attempt two.π€
Everything crossed that all this means that you will at least be able to start a gentle run very soon. The patience that you have shown and the determination to keep moving and stay fit, is truly an example to us all.
We shall watch your progress and looking for your posts
You are amazing you know... really ! The post for the last few days of June has gone up... I cannot believe we are nearly into July....hopefully your Quest next month will have you up and running again, my friend
